PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:
by Charles L. Papp, M.D.
Volunteerism Can Help You as You Help Others
Remember back when you were applying for med school. There was that ominous admission essay that was going to set you apart from all those other applicants. Like me when asked about why you wanted to be a doctor you were tempted to say, "Because I want to help people." Of course, you realized everyone else was probably saying the same thing. And to the credit of the applicants, by and large it was true. One of the noble aspects of our profession is our desire to improve the lives of others. Now fast forward to the present. As we trudge through this cold, bleak February the administrative, governmental, and professional demands can smother the idealism of our younger selves. I have a solution for your consideration -volunteering.

KMA Update
By Dale Toney, MD, Vice President KMA
The 2019 Kentucky General Assembly is in session and will be addressing many important issues and bills that will potentially affect Kentucky physicians and their patients. Several bills related to the KMA's advocacy priorities have already been filed, including tort reform, prior authorization, out of network billing, and tobacco free schools. It is anticipated that there will also be issues and possibly bills regarding medical marijuana, the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure, and a provider tax. Cory Meadows, Deputy Executive Vice President/Director of Advocacy, and Pat Padgett, Executive Vice President and CEO, lead an expert team of KMA lobbyists and keep the KMA extremely informed. The KMA Legislative Quick Action Committee meets weekly during the session to offer guidance to the team. In addition, the LMS has started a Legislative Task Force under the leadership of our new LMS President, Dr. Charles Papp, which I am excited to be a part of.

Changes are coming to the Kentucky Blood Center!
By Dennis Williams, MD
The blood donation process at Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) is being updated, and donors will see changes to registration and screening.

With these new modifications, which begin this winter, donors will be able to do the required health questionnaire electronically instead of filling in the answer bubbles by hand. At KBC donor centers and blood drives, touch-screen tablets will be provided for completing the questions. The electronic registration and screening process will provide an easy-to-use, easy-to-read display. It will also offer a convenient audible version for those who need that assistance. This will allow a paperless donor registration and screening process.
