Message from the President
Dear Members and Friends,
It seems that what's on most people's minds these days is...
"What's going on with our sanctuary?"
So here goes...
Back in July, prior to Hurricane Florence, a freak rain/wind storm occurred just as we were replacing a major section of our roof. This incident caused major damage to our flooring, ceiling, seating, lighting, and just about everything in the sanctuary. Due to the perseverance and dedication of Harold Eichenholz we were able to secure a fair and equitable settlement from our insurance company and that of our roofers. This settlement will make it possible to repair and replace everything that was lost because of the storm in July.
When Hurricane Florence was over, there was no further damage to the interior of our building but significant cleanup from debris on the exterior was required. These expenses were NOT covered by our insurance and were costly. We also discovered at that time that significant deterioration of our exterior brick work and masonry was causing leakage in several parts of our building. We are now in the process of repairing the brick and masonry to eliminate further water damage as we prepare to renovate the sanctuary.
Once we received the insurance money, the Board appointed a committee to begin the process of renovation and charged that committee to present several design ideas, with material and construction costs to comply with or be less than our insurance settlement. We owe a tremendous Yasher Koach and thanks to Pam Sender, Lyne Glaser, Diane Gerberg, Dotty Freedland, and Carolyn Moskowitz, and Rabbi Kozlow for serving on this committee. To date this committee has been meeting regularly and is getting very close to presenting several design ideas to the Board. With the help of Mark Loudermilk of the Becker Morgan Group a regional design and architectural firm, preliminary renovation plans have been presented to the committee. These plans are based on returns from our survey, as well as input from conversations with many congregants as well as Rabbi Kozlow and are compliant with all new and existing building codes. The next step is to make sure that these preliminary plans are compliant with the budget requirements. Once the committee is all on board, the plans will be presented to the entire congregation for your review and input. I expect to have several meetings for review and input of the plans and hope that we will be ready to make decisions and begin construction in the Spring.
If you have any ideas or thoughts that you would like this committee to consider and include in the project, please contact me as soon as possible.
It is our hope that we can fulfill everyone's wishes and vision of what our sanctuary will look like, and that we will keep the warmth and feeling of comfort that we had before the storm.
Shabbat Shalom, and see you in Shul,
Barry
Treasurer's Message
On behalf of the entire congregation, we want to thank those members who have already responded and paid their 2019 dues. We also want to thank all members for their support of Bnai Israel.
This is the third year of our Circle of Honor program. The Circle of Honor asks those members who are able and willing to pay enhanced dues to do so, in order to help support the synagogue's ability to accept all members regardless of financial status or ability to pay. The revenues raised by the Circle of Honor program are crucial to Bnai Israel meeting its annual budget projections.
We want to acknowledge and thank those members who have already joined the Circle of Honor in 2019. For the third consecutive year, Scott and Carol Johnston are members at the highest level, the beneficiary level. The beneficiary level involves payment of $3500 above the base dues. This year, Herbert and Ronna Zimmer have moved up to the patron level, which involves payment of $2000 above the base dues. And so far, 11 members have signed up for the sponsor level, which involves payment of $1000 above the base dues.
We hope that last year's members of the Circle of Honor who have not yet signed up for 2019 will do so. We also encourage new members to join the 2019 Circle of Honor.
Again, thank you for your support of Bnai Israel.
Jerry Smith,
Treasurer

ts that time again....buttery dough, cookie cutters, rolling pins, apricot preserves, raspberry jam, poppy seed filling, Nutella, sticky fingers, fragrant smells from the kitchen...its 2019 Hamantashen time!!!!
Baking will be done at the synagogue on March 14, 15 and 18, two shifts each day, 9-12pm and 1-3pm. Teams of 5 max work best for each shift. All encouraged to apply, this is an equal opportunity experience. Positions will be filled on a first come/first served basis. Experience not necessary (but appreciated!) On the job training. Benefits: eating hamantashen and a really good feeling of doing something nice for the community.
The shifts are during the day. If there are enough interested folks, we can do an evening on Thursday, March 14 from 5-7pm.

We
Need Plastic Bags and Crocheters
The One Room Shul House is asking for help from the congregation to collect plastic grocery bags (or from anywhere else) to make plastic sleeping mats. The bags are folded and cut into strips which become "plarn" (yarn made out of plastic) and then rolled into yarn balls. Each adult-sized mat requires about 1000 bags which are crocheted to size.
The goal is to collect enough bags to make at least one mat which will be donated to Good Shepherd Shelter on behalf of the school. Please drop off bags in the One Room Shul House (separated by color and right side out would be greatly appreciated!). This is an ongoing project and excess bags will be donated to other groups making mats.
If anyone is interested in learning more or helping to make the mats, please contact Rena Goldwasser by text 860-490-0916 or email at
[email protected]. No experience necessary - crochet skills a bonus. These mats are so useful and help to make life a bit easier for many folks in need. Thank you!!!!

This past year has again been an exciting one for the BI Men's Club highlighted by our sponsorship of the Israeli Scout Caravan visit last August. It was the second year that the Scouts performed at the Hannah Block Arts Center. It was also the second year that the Jewish Federation of Greater Wilmington cosponsored the event.
We continued to publish the Yizkor Book of Remembrance. A section was added to the Book in 2018 which lists ALL of the individuals who are memorialized on our shul's Yahrzeit wall plaques. Money raised by the Book enables the Men's club to do all of our synagogue projects. For example, last year we purchased bamboo mats for the Sukkah roof and hosted a dinner in the Sukkah. This year we will host a Super Bowl party in honor of Stephen Glaser's recovery from his very serious stroke. Our Men's Club Shabbat for 2019 will be on March 16.
Anyone interested in knowing more about any of the Men's Club activities past, present or future is welcome to contact Efraim Jaronowski, President of the BI Men's Club. Please do join our Men's Club for 2019.
Please plan to join your Sisterhood members at the Synagogue on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at 2:00 to hear and participate in a program lead by Dr. Jeff Beecher regarding Stroke Prevention. This invitation includes spouses, significant others, parents and friends. Martha Stein will also share her insights and experience as a stroke victim.
This is a perfect time to meet Sisterhood members, be part of an interesting afternoon, and join/rejoin B'nai Israel's proud Sisterhood. Please RSVP: [email protected]
Book Club News
Sisterhood has donated a book to the Bnai Israel Library in memory of Simon Wojnowich, father of Rose Zimmer. The book, edited by respected World War II historian Richard Overy, is titled
The New YorkTimes Complete Coverage of World War IIand includes hundreds of original articles from the archives of the newspaper about famous battles and famous leaders of the war years.
The Sisterhood Book Club will meet on Wednesday, March 27th, from 1-3 PM. Arlene Burns will host the meeting. The book for discussion is Karen E. Bender's new short story collection, The New Order. Our Sisterhood librarians have purchased a copy of the book for the Shul library, and it is there now waiting to be circulated. Make sure you read the riveting first story about synagogue security. The other stories are also on Jewish topics that will speak to you.
