November 19, 2018
Valley Lutheran held its annual Instrumental Concert on Sunday, Nov. 18.
Thanksgiving 2018
In the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln's call for a national day of Thanksgiving began a tradition that continues today. However, he was not the first American President to call for a day of
Thanksgiving. President George Washington did so in 1789 his first year in office. That year our
government was seated for the first time under the "new" constitution. The bloody French revolution
began. William Wilberforce began to speak out against slavery. A Chinese army was defeated and
forced out of Vietnam. James Madison introduced the Bill of Rights. There was mutiny aboard the HMS
Bounty. Mrs. Alexander Hamilton served George Washington ice cream for dessert! And on November
26, the nation celebrated its first Thanksgiving Day.

As I reflect on 2018 there are similar themes. Imperfect governments led by imperfect people govern
imperfect people with varying degrees of success. Wise and often brave people stand with those in
need of help. And, fortunately, ice cream is still served for dessert.

Unseen, but always present and acting is the eternal God who gave us, imperfect people, the freedom to
love and serve him, or not. And when he gave us that freedom, he also provided a solution for our
imperfection - His own perfect offering - Jesus.

As you gather this Thanksgiving, I hope you see God's hand at work in your life, in your family, in our
community, nation and world. When you do, offer "thankfulness and praise." And when you don't,
pray that God would open your eyes to the opportunities to love and serve Him by loving and serving
others.

Happy Thanksgiving,

~ Dr. John Brandt,
Executive Director

Kroger system upgrade
Kroger Co. Family of Stores has upgraded its system, which has resulted in Valley Lutheran High School receiving a new account number as a Non-Profit Organization (NPO). Our new number is MN482.

VLHS can receive donations from Kroger as a result of supporters linking their Kroger account with Valley's. From the beginning of August until the end of October, 59 households linked their Kroger account with Valley's, resulting in a donation of 252.93 to the school.

Contact the school office for more information.
Drop Off & Picking Up Students
When dropping off your children or picking up, please wait in the lane closest to the bushes. The lane closest to the school needs to remain open as the Fire/Emergency Lane. This is also the lane for the cars to be able to get around parked cars. Please consider parking in the lot if you intend to be waiting for a significant amount of time. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter and your flexibility with construction underway.
Grandparents/Special Friends Day Schedule
Grandparents and Special Friends love to visit Valley Lutheran, and our students love to share with them, first hand, what makes Valley so special. The last chance for them to do so this school year is Thursday, Nov. 29 at 9 a.m. when the freshmen invite their grandparents.

Special guests will take a tour of the school, sit in on a class with their student host, attend chapel, and, if they'd like, stay for lunch. If they were unable to make the date set aside for their student's specific grade, they're welcome to attend the last one. For more information, call 989-790-1676. The office has registration forms that need to be turned in by Tuesday, Nov. 27.

GIVING THANKS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, we are encouraged to step back and give thanks for what we have been given. Paul commanded the Thessalonians to be grateful in his first letter: "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." But did you know that gratitude can have a positive impact on your mental and emotional health? Try out the ideas listed at https://www.therapistaid.com/worksheets/gratitude-exercises.pdf
or come up with your own and see the positive impact being thankful can make!

Alaska Mission Trip looking for more members
Alaska Mission for Christ is sponsoring a Vacation Bible School/Bible study mission trip to Goodnews Bay, Alaska on the Bearing Sea in Southwest Alaska.  The trip leaves around July 11 and returns July 22 or 23. The team consists of area Lutheran Church Missouri Synod members and Valley Lutheran students.

The trip last year cost $1,800, and expenses will be similar this year.

Team members stay in a small parsonage or community center with a private kitchen, laundry, shower, and facilities. Most importantly, team members experience sharing the Gospel with villagers -- including 50 children -- who do not have a pastor.
