Historical Tidbit: Arthur L. Leland

Special historical tidbit with memories of one of our native sons, Arthur L. Leland. Arthur was 76 when he passed away on July 3, 2013.

Born Sept. 12, 1936 in East Bridgewater, Ma, Art was the son of the late Robert A. and Frances A. (Stearns) Leland and the grandson of the original owners of Leland Farm. He was the oldest of Bob Leland's children (all boys).

Art and his brothers and cousins worked at the farm for many years when they were young. He worked hard. He fed the chickens and candled the eggs in "Grandma" Leland's basement room. He would hold the eggs up to a special light which showed any abnormality in the eggs, especially blood spots. Those eggs would get rejected and tossed out. Leland Farm sold only top quality eggs. Art also worked in the fields when haying time rolled around. His dad would drive the tractor and Art would toss the hay onto the wagon with his pitch fork. Art would also do silo work. As the equipment would dump material into the silo, Art would spread the silage around, again using a pitch fork. I don't know how he stood the pungent odor! Art was a dedicated farm worker, for sure.

The service was held Sept 7, 2013, at the Union Congregational Church.  Art is buried out back of the church in the Leland family plots that Grandma Leland bought years ago for the family.

These are pleasant memories from my childhood in East Bridgewater. I remember picking potatoes out back of the farm, receiving 5 cents a bushel!

Respectfully submitted, Betty (Belknap) Stirling

The Buzz Around is brought to you this week by: Theresa McNulty, Janice O'Brien, Jacquelyn Rose & Gregory Venezia
Time to Bee Frugal.

Commemorating  BuzzAround.Info ’s 10th year, I am sharing with you, Dear Reader, our beginnings and lessons learned while working my way out of poverty. There can be an art to living frugally; here are thoughts and tips that made it easier for me. I am hoping if I share my story, it will help someone else.

About guilt and shame: pride has no place, because, let’s face it, poverty is hard. No-one wants to be there. If questions like: “Oh damn, the car needs fixing, what is the least amount I can pay for the power not to be shut off?” enter your life, maybe this will help you.

I started writing this newsletter on a laptop right inside the front door of my 5 room 100-year-old house on Spring St. in East Bridgewater. That was the only place I could get the internet signal from my neighbors across the street. On cold days that first winter, I would go to the public library to write. Our only heat was the wood stove in the kitchen and sometimes I couldn’t get the house above 53 degrees. The kids were at school all day, so they were fine, but if I didn’t get warm during the day, I worried about hypothermia.

Now I live in an apartment (heat included), my kids are in college, and with a bunch of help, the Buzz Team has developed a socially responsible business that builds community by publishing good news to 10,000 people each week.  BuzzAround.Info  is a great job that’s lots of fun.

It took me a couple of years, so the time to start is now! First tip: when you struggle, access community resources. Food. Seriously. Bite the bullet. Accept the help. It’s not going to cover all your food needs, but it will help. Each of our towns has a food pantry. Contact info is posted up top of this newsletter. Guilt, shame and pride: Believe me, I have plenty for all of you. Those questions of “how did I get here?” and “why am I here?” take years to answer. In the meantime, get food. Do it.

Go to the public library. Our libraries are self-serve locations for anything we could want and need. Internet Access. Computers & printers. Job search, education on any topic, music, movies and yes, books. I spent many hours writing the  BuzzAround.Info and finding solutions at our public library.
Each week I am going to publish 2 tips that helped me, just to add to the good news that our BuzzAround.Info provides. Thanks for reading! ~Jacquie
