CDO Workforce Success Story

This month we would like to celebrate a new beginning at the start of a new year with one of our customers.

She is a 27 year old single Mom of a 5 year old girl.  She started employment with a local grocery store as a cashier in mid-January.  If you were to ask her twelve months ago if she would be interested in doing cashier work she would have responded with a bold "No."

Through a Work Experience Placement (WEP) assignment she developed the skills, and more importantly, the confidence to operate a cash register and cash handling.

She also developed customer service skills through her WEP.  She attended her WEP assignment by utilizing the supportive services offered.

She used her job search skills and job search planning skills developed through counseling at CDO Workforce to attain her current position.

She is on her way to doing some great things indeed.  With this new chapter shall come more challenges and obstacles ahead.  With transitional services offered through the CDO Workforce office she can surely face them with the same courage and determination, and her success will continue.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

State of the State 2019

State of the State: 2019 Justice Agenda
"The Time Is Now"

The Constitution of New York State requires the Governor to deliver an annual message to the Legislature regarding the state of the state.

The State of the State proposals are the first step in defining the Governor's agenda in 2019.

"We created more jobs and economic opportunity in every part of the State - Upstate, Downstate, Long Island - and today we have more private sector jobs than we have ever had in history - over 8 million. Part of our agenda is that we must build on these successes."
--Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, State of the State 2019

"As part of the FY 2019 Budget, Governor Cuomo secured a historic $175 million commitment for workforce training programs in New York State. Building on the success of the bottom-up REDC model, the Governor will in the coming weeks launch a new Consolidated Funding Application for workforce investments that will support strategic regional efforts that meet businesses' short-term workforce needs, improve regional talent pipelines, expand apprenticeships, and address the long-term needs of expanding industries- with a particular focus on emerging fields with growing demand for jobs like clean energy, health technology, and computer science. Funds will also support efforts to improve the economic security of women, youth, and other populations that face significant barriers to career advancement. Governor Cuomo's new CFA for workforce development will provide essential, flexible investment in multi-faceted workforce training programs."

Article: How to Actually, Truly Focus on What You're Doing

"How to Actually, Truly Focus on What You're Doing"

Does this sound familiar?:
" Here's what my browser generally looks like: work email in the left-most tab, always open. TweetDeck in the next one, always open. A few Google Docs tabs with projects I'm working on, followed by my calendar, Facebook, YouTube, this publication's website and about 10 stories I want to read - along with whatever random shiny thing comes across my desktop. (Not to mention my iPhone constantly nagging me). This is no way to work! It's awful, and my attention is divided across a dozen different things."

In a recent New York Times Smarter Living newsletter, Tim Herrera talks to Cal Newport about a concept Tim calls "Deep Work." Deep Work is a strategy for actually focusing on the things we can do and accomplish. In this interview Cal explains how to do deep work, why it matters and how we can use it in our lives.

ABLE Accounts - Updates

ABLE National Resources Center Offers Updates on ABLE Accounts for Individuals with Disabilities.

ABLE Accounts, which are tax-advantaged savings accounts for individuals with disabilities and their families, were created as a result of the passage of the Stephen Beck Jr., Achieving a Better Life Experience Act of 2014 or better known as the ABLE Act.

The beneficiary of the account is the account owner, and income earned by the accounts will not be taxed. Contributions to the account, which can be made by any person (the account beneficiary, family and friends), must be made using post-taxed dollars and will not be tax deductible for purposes of federal taxes, however some states may allow for state income tax deductions for contribution made to an ABLE account.

The ABLE Act limits eligibility to individuals with significant disabilities with an age of onset of disability before turning 26 years of age. If you meet this age criteria and are also receiving benefits already under SSI and/or SSDI, you are automatically eligible to establish an ABLE account.

If you are not a recipient of SSI and/or SSDI, but still meet the age of onset disability requirement, you could still be eligible to open an ABLE account if you meet Social Security's definition and criteria regarding significant functional limitations and receive a letter of certification from a licensed physician.

You need not be under the age of 26 to be eligible for an ABLE account. You could be over the age of 26, but must have had an age of onset before the individual's 26 birthday.

Have you heard about the EmployAbility Pledge?

From the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities:

"New Yorkers come from a variety of backgrounds, cultures and abilities that businesses and organizations strive to reflect in their hiring practices and day-to-day operations.

One way to achieve a more inclusive business is to be accessible and embrace employment for people with disabilities.

Did you know that New York State's economy is effectively at full employment, yet 70 % of people with disabilities are unemployed? This pool of candidates represents a tremendous untapped resource of qualified employees.

Be among the first in the state to embrace people of all abilities in your workplace. Take the EmployAbility Pledge and demonstrate that your business or organization is committed to the spirit of inclusivity by employing qualified individuals with disabilities and providing everyone full opportunities to be your patrons and customers.

When you take the Pledge, you will receive a window decal and a badge for your website designating your business as one that supports inclusion. Your business or organization's name will also be listed in a press release and on the OPWDD, Employment First Commission, and other partner websites. Add your name to this list today!"

ONC BOCES Class B CDL License Program

Do you want to learn to drive a
dump truck? Opportunities to
make money while driving a
truck are out there for those with
the right type of license. ONC BOCES can
help you get yours.

They have a qualified driving instructor available along with their own dump
truck so that you can get the practice hours you'll need to pass the road
test.

You just need to go to the DMV, get your permit and then go to ONC BOCES
for the practical driving experience so that you will be ready and able to
take your road test.

They'll even schedule the road test and have their  truck
available for you to use when you're ready.

Tuition for the driver training course is $1,250. Actual driving time is flexible
and will occur at a time mutually convenient for both the student and
instructor.

For more information or to inquire about enrollment, please contact Kevin
Stevens at 607.286.7715 or through email at kstevens@oncboces.org.
