The Military Roots of American Equitation

Italian Cavalry officer Federico Caprilli pioneered the “forward riding system” of sitting lighter and more forward, using shorter stirrups to rise out of saddle, and going with the forward motion of a horse’s head and neck over jumps with a following release.

Show Jumping Hall of Famer US Army Brigadier General Harry D. Chamberlin, a graduate of West Point, attended at the Italian and French cavalry schools in the 1920s, bringing the forward riding system back to the US Cavalry School at Fort Riley, Kansas. He won Individual Silver in Jumping and Team Gold in Eventing at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.

Chamberlin rewrote the army’s horsemanship manual and created a show team to compete internationally and on the American fall horse show circuit in Washington, New York, and Toronto. His Riding and Schooling Horses (1934) and Training Hunters, Jumpers and Hacks (1937) became the foundation for the American style of today’s hunter, jumper, and equitation disciplines.
