St. Johns County 4-H Updates and Events 
4-H Awards Banquet
More than 200 attendees celebrated the accomplishments of St. Johns County 4-H members at the annual awards banquet in June. Members were recognized for  100 project record book submissions and 55 Clover Awards. In addition, 4-H club leaders shared highlights of the year. Thank you to all who attended to celebrate these dedicated youth and their work. 
 
St. Johns County 4-H Youth Development Program Seeks Volunteers 
The St. Johns County 4-H Youth Development Program is seeking club and project volunteers to work with youth ages 5 to 18. Orientation for new club and project volunteers will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 26 at the St. Johns County UF/IFAS Extension Office, 3125 Agricultural Center Drive. Volunteers will have an opportunity to help local youth learn leadership, communication, and a variety of life skills through interactive topics, including animal and plant science, healthy living, citizenship, environmental education, technology, food preparation, and photography. Scheduling is flexible and volunteers determine subject areas they prefer. The 4-H Office will provide full assistance, including training, office support, resource materials, and project curriculum. Horse and Hippology Competitions 
The St. Johns County 4-H Senior Horse Judging, and Senior and Intermediate Hippology teams, competed on April 7 and 8 at the State 4-H Contest in Gainesville. The Senior team placed third overall in the state 4-H Horse Judging competition, with Dana Kusch winning 2nd Place in high individual and Taylor Garns securing 6th Place in high individual overall. In addition, Competing against five other teams, the St. Johns County 4-H Intermediate Hippology team took second place overall. Team members included Mia Clyce, Amber Carlton, Sean Merriam, and Maci Cerasale. Amber Carlton won 2nd Place in high individual and Maci Cerasale won 5th Place in high individual overall. The St. Johns County Senior team secured 3rd Place overall out of eight teams, and included Taylor Garns, Dana Kusch, and Caroline Gordon.
St. Johns County Horse Council
horse-saddle.jpg The St. Johns County Horse Council is a local nonprofit that strives to promote, defend, and propagate equestrian interests in St. Johns County. Since being established in 1999, the Council has become involved in promoting all types of equine activities and raising awareness regarding the economic impact the equestrian community has in St. Johns County. In addition to quarterly public meetings, the Council hosts numerous events at the St. Johns County Equestrian Center for handlers of all ages and experience levels. Volunteer Opportunities with St. Johns County Boards and Committees 
The St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners provides residents who have an interest in participating in their local government with a variety of board and commission opportunities. Depending on the board or commission, the volunteer positions consider and make recommendations regarding a myriad of topics including planning and zoning issues, development projects, the library, parks and recreation facilities and programs, and arts, culture, and tourism matters. St. Johns County Prepares for 2018 Hurricane Season 
To prepare for the 2018 Hurricane Season, St. Johns County recently hosted an annual hurricane exercise at the Emergency Operations Center. County staff and partner agencies participated in an immersive hurricane simulation to better prepare for actual emergencies within our area. Special thanks to the City of St. Augustine, St. Johns County Fire Rescue, St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, the Florida Department of Health, and all other participating agencies for their help in making this event a success.

St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Master Plan Update Meetings
St. Johns County is hosting Parks and Recreation Master Plan update community meetings from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17 at the Players Community Center, 175 Landrum Lane, and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18 at the City of St. Augustine Beach City Hall, 2200 A1A Beach Blvd. The meetings are a component of a multi-phase Parks and Recreation Master Plan update process that will create a more dynamic and diverse parks and recreation system to generate numerous economic, social, and environmental benefits. Residents are invited to the meetings and offer feedback regarding St. Johns County Parks and Recreation facilities and services. For more information, please call 904.209.0344.
St. Johns County Library Use and Facilities Survey
The St. Johns County Public Library System invites patrons to participate in the Library Current Use and Facilities Survey to provide feedback on use of County libraries and related resources, library facilities, and additional services desired. Download the St. Johns County "Reach the Beach" Mobile App
St. Johns County's "Reach the Beach" mobile app helps residents and visitors spend less time in the car and more time on the beach by providing quick access to beach driving conditions, access and facility locations, lifeguard information, and emergency contacts. Apple and Android users can download the app for free by searching "St. Johns County Beaches" in the App Store or Google Play. St. Johns County Public Libraries host Eleventh Annual Nature Detective Lizard Workshops
St. Johns County Public Libraries are hosting free, interactive, and science-based Nature Detective workshops for children ages 6 through 12 throughout the summer. This year, participants will have the opportunity to learn about anole lizards through hands-on activities, take-home materials, and books that can be checked out from the libraries. The workshops will be held at the following locations:
  • Bartram Trail Branch Library, 904.827.6960 - June 25 / 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
  • Anastasia Island Branch Library, 904.209.3730 - July 18 / 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
  • Hastings Branch Library, 904.827.6970 - July 25 / 10:30 a.m.
  • Main Library, 904.827.6940 - July 27 / 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Nature Detective workshops are sponsored and supported by the Garden Club of St. Augustine and the Friends of the Library organizations of each branch library. 2018 St. Johns County Library Summer Reading Program
kids_reading_book.jpg The St. Johns County Public Library System is encouraging youth and adults to participate in the annual free summer reading program which offers a reading log, educational classes, and exciting events focusing on this year's "Libraries Rock" theme. From geology to rock and roll, participants will explore all facets of "rock" and can earn prizes throughout the summer as reading logs are completed. Each branch library will host rock-themed events, including a kids' rock concert, rock clubs, and geology classes. Vilano Boat Ramp Improvements Projects­
Parking at the Vilano Boat Ramp will be intermittently impacted through August due to projects that will construct a marine rescue docking facility and repair two floating docks damaged in Hurricane Irma. While a portion of the parking lot will be utilized as a staging area, a majority of the parking will remain open to public use. The boat ramp will also remain open and accessible to the public throughout the project. Boaters and visitors are encouraged to exercise caution while utilizing the facility during this time. St. Johns County Holiday Hours
Independence Day - July 4
All departments of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, St. Johns County Administrative offices, library branches, and the Pet Center will be closed Wednesday, July 4 in observance of Memorial Day. All offices and branches will resume standard business hours on Thursday, July 5.

Garbage, recycling, and yard debris collection schedules will not be affected. The Tillman Ridge and Stratton Road solid waste scale houses will remain open on the holiday during standard business hours.
 
Labor Day - September 3 
All departments of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, St. Johns County Administrative offices, Library branches, and the Pet Center will be closed Monday, September 3 in observance of Labor Day. All offices and branches will resume standard business hours on Tuesday, September 4.
 
Garbage, recycling, and yard debris collection schedules for the week will not be delayed. The Tillman Ridge and Stratton Road solid waste scale houses will remain open on the holiday during standard business hours.
