Dear Village Resident,
Hi Everyone,

I want to update you on the Main Street new culvert/bridge project. Construction was delayed due to a fiber optic cable being discovered in the area where they were working. All work had to be stopped until it was spliced and relocated. This should be completed now, and construction should resume this week. We are hoping the project will be completed by the end of the month. You should notice that a new sidewalk was also put in which connects to the Winn Road bike path. The new culvert and sidewalk are part of the Safe Routes to School grant we received to allow kids to walk or ride their bikes to school safely down Main Street. New sidewalks and parking spaces are also being constructed at the east end of Main Street and the road will be repaved from Blivin to Winn Road.

"It's Not Too Much to Mask" McHenry County
Resume McHenry County has launched the “It’s Not Too Much to Mask” campaign to encourage and promote mask wearing. To keep our county and state “open” and our economy moving forward, we must continue to do what we’ve been doing—physical distancing, frequently washing hands and wearing face coverings—so we don’t go backward. Health experts agree that wearing a mask (the proper way) is one of the best things we can do to prevent the spread of the virus. You can show off your mask using hashtags #MaskOnMcHenryCounty and #ResumeMcHenryCounty and posting to your social media channels. Tag the local business you're visiting to show them some love and your friends to encourage them to participate!
ComEd Tree Trimming
In the next few months, ComEd will perform vegetation maintenance to ensure system electrical reliability, as vegetation contact with ComEd equipment is a leading cause of outages. Affected property owners will be notified. For more information about vegetation maintenance along power lines and ComEd’s “Right Tree, Right Place” program, visit http://www.ComEd.com/Trees.

Blast from the Past
Photos of the Nick Freund family a who lived at 2110 Main Street.

Nick Freund, the town blacksmith who was discussed last week, had six children- five girls and a boy - in a 19 year span with his wife Anna, who died in 1918 in childbirth. Martha and Susie were the firstborns, born in 1897 and 1899, and are pictured above together..

George, who was born in 1901, worked for his father and was a little bit of a mischief-maker. When he was young, he would jump into his father's car and race down Main Street throwing up clouds of dust (before the street was paved), only to stop and park the car at Blivin Street (.2 miles away) to run some errands. This did not sit well with the women who had just put their laundry on the line. George was on the Spring Grove baseball team and retired to Florida in his later years.

Eleanor Freund, who was born in 1913, married Victor Freund from McHenry (who was not related) so she didn't have to change her last name. Freund was and still is a common name in McHenry county. She died in 2006 of Alzheimer's disease, but was still able to share her memories and these photos in 2002. She outlived all her siblings by over 25 years.

The family kept milk cows in the cement barn at the back of the house at 2110 Main Street , which still stands today. Spring Grove residents recalled bringing their small milk pails there every day in the 1930s to buy milk from Mary Freund, Nick's second wife. Eleanor had many pictures to share of family parties by the old barn throughout the years like the one above.
