In Conversation: Norm Ellstrand & Roger Ransom
Sunday, October 7 at 4 pm

Please join us in welcoming local authors Norm Ellstrand (Sex on the Kitchen Table: The Romance of Plants and Your Food) and Roger Ransom (Gambling on War: Confidence, Fear, and Tragedy of the First World War) for a conversation and Q&A.  Ellstrand and Ransom will also discuss their personal journey of writing works that straddle the line between the popular and the scholarly.

An eye-opening medley of serious science, culinary delights, and humor, Sex on the Kitchen Table offers new insight into fornicating flowers, salacious squash, and what we owe to them. In Gambling on War, Ransom sheds new light on the enduring puzzle that is the First World War by employing insights from prospect theory and notions of risk and uncertainty.

When Women Win: Erin Edwards Campaign Fundraiser
Sunday, October 14 at 6 pm

The Kavanaugh hearings have made the absolute necessity of fair representation on our governing bodies frighteningly clear. Our City Council is currently made up of six white men and one Latino man, and although I appreciate their service to our community, I do think it's time to make our city government reflect its constituents more appropriately. In this spirit, I invite you to Cellar Door to meet Erin Edwards. Erin is running in Ward 1, but remember, our City Council responds to  issues that affect us all, no  matter what  ward you vote in.

When Erin Edwards realized that there  were no women on
Riverside's City  Council, she knew she had to step up. How can Riverside be a city where everyone can thrive if we are not a city where everyone is represented? Running for City Council in Ward 1, Edwards would bring her expertise fighting homelessness, hunger, and gender inequality to City Hall. In a place where over 60% of our homeless population is women, this is much-needed. As the mother of a young daughter,  Edwards is dreaming big: what will it  take to see a woman  on  Riverside's City Council in 2019? And what will it look like to live in a city where  everyone can thrive? 
Educators' Workshop: Teaching & Experiencing Comics in the Classroom
Friday, October 19 at 5 pm

Local author, educator, and 2018 American Book Award winner Rachelle Cruz's new graphic novel textbook  Experiencing Comics: An Introduction to Reading, Discussing, and Creating Comics  is out now! This accessible, introductory guide to comics shows readers how to critically examine the craft and storytelling elements found inside a graphic novel or comic. 

Join Tracy Edmunds (curriculum specialist and educational consultant), Derek Heid(English teacher at Temecula Vally High School), and Rachelle Cruz (UC Riverside Lecturer and editor of Experiencing Comics) in an educators' workshop on the benefits of teaching and incorporating comics at any educational level and subject. Tracy, Derek, and Rachelle will talk about their strategies for comics in the classroom as well as the importance of inclusivity through comics before opening the conversation to questions.

Ngugi wa Thiong'o

We're incredibly pleased to welcome author and Distinguished Professor Ngugi wa Thiong'o for a reading and signing! 

Thiong'o is the author of several novels and memoirs, including Wrestling with the Devil, Dreams in a Time of War: A Childhood Memoir, and  Wizard of the Crow , a novel that  The Washington Post  has called "a great, spellbinding tale... [Thiong'o] has turned the power of storytelling into a weapon against totalitarianism."

Drag Queen Story Hour & Costume Party
Saturday, October 27 at 11 am

Happy Halloween! We're so excited to host our second drag queen storytime, and this time we invite you and your children to come dressed in your best Halloween costume. 

Our local guest queens - Athena Kills, Scalene Onixxx, and Starmie Sparxxx - will read from our favorite spooky reads. This special storytime is appropriate for children, usually between the ages of 3-8; toddlers and babies are still welcome!
