I'm excited to work with West County residents on a new community led air quality management program that's being facilitated by the  Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Community members from the Richmond-San Pablo Area will be leading an effort to develop a Community Air Monitoring Plan to reduce pollution.

Community leadership and participation are vital to ensure the plan reflects the community's values, needs, and preferences as we work together to improve public health.

As a board member of the Air District and a member of the California Air Resources Board, I advocated strongly for this new initiative. It's part of a wider state effort to improve air quality in communities that are highly impacted by pollution.

This new effort  --  California's  Community Air Protection Program -- was passed in 2017  as Assembly Bill 617. While California has seen tremendous improvement in air quality, the improvements have been uneven across regions and neighborhoods. Some communities, like Richmond and San Pablo, are located close to freeways, rail, ports, industry and other large pollution sources. We need additional focus and resources to reduce pollution levels.

This new community initiative will expand existing air monitoring by involving residents on the front-lines of monitoring decisions. At the conclusion of the air monitoring, a pollution reduction plan will be developed and implemented.
