California Firefighters Open Up About PTSD  By Paola Baker
Via Twitter

Frank Lima still remembers, with a disturbing amount of clarity, some of the images he saw as part of the group of firefighters who responded to the World Trade Center terrorist attacks on 9/11.

"I have a noise-a horrific noise, a scream, from someone trapped inside-I can still hear it in my head, years later. It was just too late to save them," Lima said.

Lima, vice president for the International Association of Fire Firefighters (IAFF)'s 10th District, which covers large areas of the West Coast, has been in the firefighting world for almost 30 years. In that time, he's covered deadly house fires, the WTC attacks, drive-by shootings and much more.

It becomes normal in a way, Lima says. Firefighters are often used to jumping from call to call, patient to patient, incident to incident, often without taking much of a breath or giving a passing thought to what they just experienced.

But much like the layer of soot and ash that tends to permeate all firefighters' uniforms and gear, some incidents stick around much longer than intended.

"I still get nightmares from time to time," Lima said. "I'll go for months at a time where I don't get them, then all of a sudden they start again."

It's a scenario that's heartbreakingly familiar to anyone who's spent time in the fire service, a world where bravery, pride, and the overwhelming need to help others can often overshadow the inherent trauma that comes with it.

"Everyone knows we go to fires, but we respond to every single emergency there is,"Lima said. "We actually touch those hurt and dead patients. And it wears on you."
QUIET WARRIOR: NEVER GIVE UP; FIRST ABOVE-THE-KNEE AMPUTEE FIREFIGHTER RECALLS THE ROAD TO RECOVERY, RETURN TO DEPARTMENT
SARAH CALAMS, 9/14/2018

Lt. Brandon Anderson, a 16-year veteran firefighter, returned to his department as a fully qualified firefighter just 10 months after a motorcycle crash

In August 2016, Lt. Brandon Anderson, a 16-year veteran with the Fishers Fire Department in Indiana, had a day off from work and went for a motorcycle ride to spend a weekend at the lake.

About an hour and a half away from his destination, a driver in the lane next to Anderson cut over without warning. Anderson was thrown off his motorcycle and onto the pavement. After skidding along the road, his motorcycle landed on top of him and crushed his right leg.

In an instant, life as he knew it had changed forever.

NO CAUSE DETERMINED FOR A THIRD OF CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES
Julie Watson, 9/23/2018

Photo by_ Noah Berger_AP
California officials quickly determined an arsonist started last month's huge wildfire southeast of Los Angeles, and that two weeks earlier sparks from a vehicle produced a deadly wildfire in the far northern part of the state.

But causes for many of California's worst blazes of the past decade remain a mystery.

The Associated Press reviewed state data on the 10 largest wildfires and 10 most destructive in terms of homes and buildings burned for each year dating to 2008. Lightning was the most common cause, accounting for about a quarter of those fires, followed by incidents involving power lines.

However, investigators could not determine a cause for about a third of those fires. Experts say each is a missed opportunity  to learn something new.    READ MORE
WHY PROFESSIONAL PTSD TREATMENT WORKS
IAFF STAFF
9/17/2018

If you struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), you know that this condition can impact nearly every aspect of your life. However, even if you desperately want relief, you may have reservations about seeking professional treatment. Maybe you worry that it'll require too much time or money. You might even secretly believe that you're beyond help, or that you're too broken to be fixed.

Taking steps to seek treatment can be intimidating, but it can also be worth it. While you might feel stuck now, research has demonstrated that evidence-based treatment can help people struggling with PTSD work through their symptoms, process trauma and find a new life in recovery.

Professional PTSD treatment helps people in three key ways.

Your trauma may feel all-encompassing, but you can find hope and healing in professional treatment. It all starts with a call. The IAFF Center of Excellence is a behavioral health treatment facility dedicated to fire fighters and paramedics. If you or a love struggles with PTSD, addiction or any other mental health condition, our professionals are specially trained to help. Reach out to a representative today for more information, or to get started.
