Salt & Light Youth Group
Cultivate Kindness Reported by Mrs. Nyrie Bedrossian

On Friday, February 8th, the St. Sarkis Salt & Light Youth Group met for their 1st session of the Winter Season. We had over 30 youth attend, mostly returning members, but we also welcomed some new faces excited to join our youth group. As they are accustomed to, the youth mingled with their friends for the first half hour of the evening, having dinner and socializing.

Following dinner, they all gathered to listen to an assembly called "Cultivate Kindness" presented by Richard Specht, founder of the ReesSpecht Life Foundation. This one of a kind, touching and inspiring presentation had our entire audience that evening, kids and adults alike, engaged and in awe of the message being delivered. The speaker, Richard Specht, who happens to be a former middle school science teacher, was able to relate to the youth through personal and scientific experiences and help them understand that one's outlook on life is about perspective and the choices they make, specifically encouraging them to choose kindness.

The turning point of the evening, the moment when every person in the audience fell silent and really understood the powerful message of the presentation, was when the presenter gave his personal story, one that included a tragedy of losing his 2 years old son and the dark days that his family faced after that tragic event, followed by an act of kindness from a complete stranger that inspired him to "Pay It Forward" and continue to spread acts of kindness all over the world. Through his unique and interactive presentation style, Richard was able to have every member of the audience feel the pain of the tragedy, and then understand how one act of kindness, no matter how simple, can start a domino effect of spreading kindness and inspiration. The kids were extremely engaged in the presentation, asking questions and even finding Armenia on the interactive map of "Pay It Forward" kindness acts that have reached all over the world.

The presentation truly touched every member of the audience that night, which was visible when everyone eagerly approached Richard after the talk, first to offer hugs, and then to grab a "Pay It Forward Card", their promise to spread their own little act of kindness in the community. We look forward to hearing from the youth at future sessions to see what acts of kindness they have exhibited and can share with us.

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO TIMOTHY (3:1-12)
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God- having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth-men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.
You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings-what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (6.22-38)
The next day the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there. They also saw that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. Then some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal." Then they said to him, "What must we do to perform the works of God?" Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent." So they said to him, "What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing?  Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" Then Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." They said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always."
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.  Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD (DYARNUNTARACH)
On Thursday, February 14, the Armenian Church commemorated the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord to the Temple (Dyarnuntarch in Armenian, which means "bringing forward of the Lord"). This feast always falls on February 14-forty days after the Nativity (January 6). It commemorates the presentation of the Lord to the Temple by Mary and Joseph according to Mosaic Law (See Numbers 18:15). In the temple, a righteous and devout man named Simeon to whom it had been revealed that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord, took Jesus in his arms, blessed God and said, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." (See Luke 2:22-40)

Some pre-Christian Armenian customs have been incorporated into this feast, including one that remains popular to this day, especially in the Middle East and Armenia. In recent years the tradition has been revived here in the United States as well. On the eve of the feast, a bonfire is lit outside of the church using a flame from the altar. Young people, especially newlyweds, gather around the fire as the flames subside, the young men leap over the flames. The light of the bonfire is symbolic of Christ who is the Everlasting Life and Light of the world.

THE PROPHET JONAH
On Friday, February 15, the Armenian Church remembers the Prophet Jonah (Hovnan), one of the Minor Prophets. The Minor Prophets are not considered less important than the ones called Major Prophets, but their books are shorter. All of the Minor Prophets were servants of God who proclaimed His will to people in need of repentance.

The story of Jonah and the whale is one of the better-known stories in the Old Testament. Jonah's feast falls on the last day of the Fast of the Catechumens, and after three days without any specified readings, the reading for tomorrow is the entire book of Jonah. Just as the people of Nineveh fasted and repented from their wicked ways, so too do the people of God during this preliminary fast before Great Lent (Medz Bahk), the most penitential season of the year.

SAINT SARKIS THE WARRIOR
Saturday, February 16, the Armenian Church commemorates St. Sarkis the Warrior, his son Mardiros, and 14 faithful soldiers. This is a moveable feast that can occur between January 11 and February 16. It follows the Fast of the Catechumens, which is not connected to St. Sarkis, but has become associated with this saint, even often referred to as the fast of St. Sarkis.

Sarkis was a 4 th century Roman soldier who became a Christian. He rose through the military ranks because of his valiant campaign on behalf of the Emperor Constantine. With the accession of Emperor Julian, Sarkis and his son took refuge in Armenia, where Christianity had already been the nation's official religion. Later they went to Persia to join the Persian army to fight Julian. Both fought with exceptional bravery. The Persian leader, Shapur II, tried to convince them to abandon their Christian faith and embrace Zorastrianism. Both refused, and father and son were martyred. Fourteen loyal Christian soldiers who went to claim the bodies were also killed. Eventually, Christians secured the remains and sent them to Assyria where they remained until the fifth century when Mesrob Mashdots had the remains transferred to the city of Karpi in the area of Vaspurakan in Armenia. A monastery was built over the site of the graves.

Also commemorated this week:
Monday, February 18: Sts. Adom the Generals and companions
Tuesday, February 19: St. Sookias the Martyr and companions
Thursday, February 21: St. Voski the Priest and companions
