Blog: One Dollop of Kindness to Go!
Everyday, the people who work at Macomb County Habitat for Humanity cross paths with many people. Some are donors, others are volunteers. Scores are shoppers in our retail operations, and a handful of very special people call themselves Board members.

On any given day, as these men, women, teens and children grace our paths, we never know who is well or ill – happy or sad. All have vibrant smiles as they try to help our mission make sense. I try to remember this each time I meet a person and extend my hand to them. Are they here even though they should be healing? Why do they appear so elated? What losses have they incurred that might have hurt their heart or deflated their spirit.
Habitat Homeowner of the Year
Every year, Macomb County Habitat for Humanity nominates hardworking volunteers, homeowners, and touching stories to the Habitat for Humanity Michigan AIM Conference. This year, the story of homeowner Tiffany (Grenke) Flood was selected as the winner for the Homeowner of the Year award! Tiffany purchased her home from Macomb Habitat in March of 2011. Since then, she got married and took the skills she learned on Habitat build sites, and she and her husband started a construction company of their own, purchasing four vacant land lots from us earlier this year! Congratulations, Tiffany!
Help Us Win This Contest November 15 - 25!
Macomb County Habitat for Humanity has been selected as one of three participating charities in the Mall at Partridge Creek's “For Goodness Sake” Holiday Charity Contest, from November 15-25.

We encourage our followers to shop at The Mall at Partridge Creek from November 15 – November 25. Before shopping, please download the ZipLoop App (available for iPhone and Android) that will allow you to assign any in-center retail purchase receipt dollar amounts to a charity of your choice (Macomb Habitat!). ZipLoop will record a running total of the dollar amounts that have been assigned to each charity. At the conclusion of the contest, the charity with the highest assigned dollar amount total based on the app will be named the winner of the contest!

Our nonprofit will have the opportunity to win a donation from the Mall at Partridge Creek of $3,000 as the first-place winner. The second-place winner will receive a $2,000 donation and the third-place winner will receive a $1,000 donation.

Great Volunteer Support in September!
August closed with three days of work at Dakota High School prepping the four home sections to be moved to a new location.

With the strong national interest in the week of 9-11 as a time of service, we could have ten teams active in that week, but chose four to lend a hand with our current capacity in construction.
Crestmark Bank supported the Sarsfield rehab in Warren with a team of 10.
GM Side Closures returned for the fifth year, this time for their hardest project – rearranging the household goods at our Shelby ReStore – moving cabinets, tile, paint, electrical, appliances and much more.
Daimler North America Corp . were first time volunteers (related to Mercedes Benz Financial) with a team of 19 to advance the interior work at the Rheinmetall Automotive home for a veteran family in Clinton Twp. Lots of trim around doors, door painting and installation, some exterior work. Germany, Netherlands, France, Argentina and the U.S. were represented on the team.
GM PPO got their aggressions out on a demolition project at Harvest Time Church in Warren, in partnership with long-time supporter, Passport Pizza. Filled a dumpster with a team of 24 as they removed walls, windows and doors to expand space at the church for their feeding ministries and worship. Salvageable building materials were taken around the corner to our Warren ReStore to sell.
Are you a Thrivent Benefit Member?
Your Thrivent Action Team effort would be a great way to support Macomb Habitat. The $250 gift card that comes with that grant could go a long way, for instance:
  • Help us with silent auction items for our Gala Event on Nov. 9th - We can give you ideas on what can support that event.
  • Stock a pantry for a new homeowner – nonperishable foods, cookware, small appliances for a family moving into their newly purchased Habitat home. Attend a dedication or open house to meet the family and celebrate with them.
  • Lunch support – Provide food and volunteers (youth can help, too) to serve lunch for multiple volunteer teams of 10-25 volunteers to fit your schedule and ours.
  • Landscaping Team – Select perennials and annuals, shrubs and mulch for a Habitat home, consulting and coaching a family in their care. Have a planting team install them. Our next home to landscape would be in late October, early Nov. in Clinton Twp., being built for a veteran family.
Check out the member resources at Thrivent.com, and talk over your ideas with Dave Tirsell at dtirsell@macombhabitat.org  before you launch.
Dave Goes Abroad Again!
