STEM Inspirations - ISU Student Caryn Dawson

Iowa State University Sophomore, Caryn Dawson, always had an interest in agriculture and a desire to help people. When she learned about the Global Resources Systems program offered at ISU, “I knew it was perfect for me and it would help me find a job doing what I love, traveling and helping solve issues in agriculture.” As a 4-H member in high school, she worked with mentor and former North Central STEM Hub Advisory Board Member, John Bonner. “John has introduced me to people and helped me so much within the past 3 years but has always suggested a plethora of ideas and opportunities allowing me to choose what I am most interested in.”

One of those ideas proved life changing. After high school, she traveled to Argentina on a Rotary Exchange. “I felt that it helped me mature through experiences and learning a new language.” The experience also helped prepare her for University by giving her a global perspective in agriculture and learning a new language. As a University student, she quickly adapted good study habits and recognized the value of math and science.

Ms. Dawson is majoring in Global Resource Systems and Horticulture with minors in Spanish and Animal Science. Someday she hopes to work with farmers in Central and South America, possibly as an extension outreach person.
