THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER

Why do we pray for the dead?
We pray for them, because we still hold them in our love, and because we trust that in God's presence those who have chosen to serve him will grow in his love, until they see him as he is. page 862

A Reflection from Holy Nativity School Principal

Our Christian identity as a school directly benefits our children--your children--in several ways.  Most importantly, it gives a regular opportunity for even the youngest child to ask big, wondering questions and develop a sense of security in a world that aims towards love and justice.  It allows them to learn that our efforts may fall short, but chances are infinite to do better.  One popular story in chapel tells of how the disciple Peter is being chastised by Jesus in almost all of his appearances in the Bible, but that it is Peter whom Jesus deems the rock on whom His church should be built.

I especially like the Episcopal Church's focus on scripture, tradition, and reason, emphasizing the peace that passes all understanding that faith can bring, while acknowledging that, at it's deepest, that faith is both numinous and beyond explanation.

The Episcopal Church was invited to Hawaii by Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, who found a great comfort and kinship with this very English form of worship that they found dignified, with words and forms to explain and contextualize the existential crises and questions that come to all.  The respect and care that both these remarkable people brought to their people is a story worth telling over and over.  Chapels, as well as 4th and 8th grade history lessons, bring the pair close to our students.  The monarchs' belief illuminates Hawaii's rich history and inspires us, over 150 years later, with our own love of our place.

As an Episocopal school, we honor our heritage with reverence, and look with warmth and respect at different beliefs.  We use Godly Play, which tells Bible stories and allows children to share and wonder.  You are always welcome to join us.  (See the listing at the end of this article for days and times for your child's class).

This year, I invite you with great joy to our Advent program, "A Gift For You," on Friday, December 13 at 9:00.  Our focus is on the children being both participants and audience as all classes share in songs and ideas to honor this season (the four Sundays preceding Christmas) that helps us fully appreciate the Holy Nativity to come.  We are grateful to the members of the 6th grade class whom agreed to take the parts of shepherds, king, and Mary, and to design the cover of the programs.  The 7/8 graders frame this story, and all classes have worked with their teachers to bring this musical "gift to you.".   Special thanks to Dr. Cat, whose musical support has been tireless and artful.

The PTO will offer families opportunities to celebrate together.  You will be receiving information soon.  Holidays are so hectic (what happened to Thanksgiving?) but I hope you'll join us on December 13, in the have.

If you have any questions about our religion program, don't hesitate to ask me!  Having taught in both religious and secular schools, I am happy to listen and talk.

With faith and thanksgiving,
Jyo

In the 1930's the (national) General Convention of the Episcopal Church launched the Forward Day by Day Movement, producing booklets, to be used each day, to provide guidance for prayer and study. Many people start their day with these booklets, while others turn to them as a break from a busy day or before sleeping at night. The Church of the Holy Nativity subscribes to this program, but recently some have missed seeing the booklets. Alas, we failed to resubscribe on time, so those relying on these materials have been disappointed. Good news: our subscription has now been renewed and both small and large-print copies are now available again. Please see Jean Steele for more information
