Recognizing and Breaking Free of Perfectionism:
Tips for Helping Children Minimize this Self-Defeating Trait
We often hear how perfectionism can drive people toward success. However, perfectionism has many significant negative consequences, including anxiety and depression, and is self-defeating. Learn more about perfectionism and how this trait develops into a pattern that is not sustainable or balanced. We will review the signs of perfectionism, how it leads to anxiety and depression, and what parents can do to encourage cognitive and behavioral routines that minimize this trait.

FIFTH GRADERS VISIT THE BROAD IN LA
|
|
On Wednesday, 2/13, Laguna fifth graders traveled to LA to visit
The Broad, an art museum that houses one of the world's leading contemporary art collections.
Leading up to the trip, students studied works of art by contemporary artists like Banksky, Ai Weiwei, Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring. At The Broad, they were able to see some of the works up close and discuss the activism and deeper messages often depicted in contemporary art.
“It was fascinating to hear our young learners make such sophisticated observations about what they were viewing," says Fifth Grade Teacher Jill Sonbudtasan. "One student said in response to Warhol’s soup can, 'Sometimes art can bend our ideas of what beauty is!'... and I couldn’t agree more!"

SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS EXPLORE NEW PERSPECTIVES
|
|
Today, 2/14, sixth graders shared presentations about their recent class reading,
Out of My Mind,
a novel about a girl named Melody who lives with cerebral palsy.
Student groups were tasked with the question, "What if Melody went to Laguna?" Each group identified a social/emotional problem to address, as well as solved a physical challenge a person with special needs might encounter on our campus.
The resulting presentations were thoughtful and solution-oriented. Great job, sixth graders!

LAGUNA MOCK TRIAL TEAM TO COMPETE AT SANTA BARBARA COURTHOUSE ON 2/23
|
|
After nearly five long months of legal preparation and working with local attorneys who volunteer their time, Laguna Blanca’s Mock Trial Team—a student club open to grades 9-12—will once again head to the historic Santa Barbara Courthouse on Saturday, February 23 for the annual all-day Santa Barbara County Mock Trial competition.
The program is led by Assistant to the Head of School Jessica Tyler, who holds a Juris Doctor degree, as well as returning attorney coaches Annie Hayes, Morgan Lucas, and Dawn O’Donnell. New this year, the team had the pleasure of working with attorney coach Neil Levinson. The students will serve as defenders, prosecutors, witnesses, clerk, and bailiff in a murder trial to ultimately decide: guilty or not guilty?
“Both new and returning students have done a remarkable job preparing for this full-blown trial," says Tyler. "I can't wait to see their hard work pay off and their talents unfold in the courtroom!”
Best of luck to the following members of the Mock Trial team:
