Some people love the holiday season. To get into the spirit some start playing Christmas music early, and others start decorating right after Halloween. It seems Thanksgiving is just one stop along the way; however, I believe that Thanksgiving deserves more attention. In fact, people may be happier every day by simply giving thanks more often.
The sad fact is that most people feel underappreciated which contributes greatly to unhappiness. When I teach people about motivation, recognition, and rewards, I ask my participants, "Who feels over-appreciated?" Only one person has ever raised her hand. Pleasantly surprised, I asked her to share her experience. She said that she used to work for a non-profit organization, making half of her fair-market salary, yet she loved working there because at the end of each day, the director stood at the door and shook everyone's hands as they left thanking them for their work that day. For her, that simple yet sincere thank you was worth the missing half of her salary.
How do you give thanks to those you appreciate? Don't wait for the holidays or other special occasions. Start today! Show your gratitude by being sincere and specific. Maybe someday you'll be the reason for someone to feel over-appreciated, and that's something to celebrate.
