DeRIDDER, La--Fort Polk Progress recently awarded a $12,900 Education Initiative grant to the Beauregard Parish School Board. Michael Reese, Fort Polk Progress president, presented the board with the funds at a regular meeting Feb. 14 on behalf of the organization.
"Fort Polk Progress focuses on a lot of areas in our support of Fort Polk military families. But no area is more important to the military families than quality education for their students, and their students go to schools in our communities," Reese said. "So on behalf of our board of directors tonight, I'm pleased to award the Beauregard Parish School Board with a grant from Fort Polk Progress to fund technology in the classroom."
Fort Polk Progress spearheads the Education Initiative in partnership with Beauregard Parish and Vernon Parish schools, the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk, the Vernon Parish Chamber of Commerce and community stakeholders. It aims to improve school performance and educate parents on school curriculum in Vernon Parish and Beauregard Parish school districts, which have a large population of military-connected students enrolled.
The grant will be used to fund a classroom set of 30 Chromebooks and one interactive whiteboard for use at Beauregard Parish schools.
BPSB Superintendent Timothy Cooley expressed his appreciation to Fort Polk Progress for the grant, stating that it allows the district to provide quality technology-driven education to its students. He said Beauregard Parish schools implemented the use of Chromebooks this school year along with Google Classroom "to integrate all aspects of teaching and learning."
"In our increasingly technology-oriented and technology-dependent world, it is imperative that our classrooms are equipped with hardware and software to enhance education," Cooley said. "By staying on the cutting edge of the use of technology in our schools, we are providing our students with the tools, information, and skills they will need to succeed in their future endeavors."
