Macomb 4-H welcomes Karam-Burk to new role
|
Macomb County MSU Extension 4-H is thrilled to welcome its newest AmeriCorps member, Elizabeth Karam-Burk. As part of her service, she will be planning and organizing short-term 4-H S.T.E.A.M. clubs, recruiting interested volunteers and planning quarterly 4-H family nights.
Many of you may know her as Elly. She has been involved with 4-H as a member of Ray Community 4-H Club since she was five years old. She started her 4-H journey growing one of the tallest sunflowers at the Armada Fair. It wouldn't even fit into the exhibit barn.

From there, her wonderful club leader,Marilyn Bohm, introduced her to her passion working with glass -- stained glass, glass mosaics, glass etchings, and glass fusing.
Once she aged out of 4-H, Elly continued her involvement through leadership roles. In 2014, she interned with MSU Extension under 4-H Program Coordinator Elizabeth Duran. Through this experience, she helped plan and coordinate the Teen Counselor Program and 4-H day camps at the Max Thompson Family Resource Center in Warren. She is currently a student at Macomb Community College with the goal of becoming a Special Education teacher.

S.T.E.A.M.Y Halloween - Oct. 24

Have you ever wanted to be a mad scientist? Here's your chance! Join MSU Extension
4-H for S.T.E.A.M.Y Halloween at Jermaine Jackson Center in Mount Clemens from 6-8 p.m. on October 24, 2018 to create S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) based experiments. This program is open to youth ages 5-19 and is FREE.

Day of the Dead - Oct. 28

Join MSU Extension from 2-6 p.m. on October 28, 2018 at St. Francis-St. Maximilian, 62811 New Haven Road, Ray Township for Day of the Dead (El Dia de los Muertos) . Even though people may observe Dia de los Muertos, or
the Day of the Dead, in cemeteries, there is nothing morbid about this holiday. In Latino communities death isn't something to be feared. Instead, death is seen as a natural cycle of life.

Youth participants ages 5-19 will learn about Day of the Dead, make traditional crafts, and enjoy music, dancing and food. The cost is $5 per youth, max. $15 per family. Year-end financial statements due by Nov. 1st
Club and Committee leaders, it's time to turn in your group's
Annual Financial Summary Report for the last 4-H program year (September 1, 2017-August 31, 2018). Each club and committee is required to complete this form, whether it has money and inventory or not.
Please send your group's completed form to Macomb County MSU Extension, Attn: 4-H, 21885 Dunham Road, Suite 12, Clinton Township, MI 48036 or fax it to 586-469-6948 by 5 p.m. on November 1, 2018.

4-H enrollments and re-enrollments are accepted at any time, however, returning members planning to show 4-H projects at the 2019 Armada Fair need to be re-enrolled in 4-H Online and have their participation fees paid (or postmarked) by 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2018.

A Club Leadership Workshop is coming to MSU Extension in Clinton Township on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018 from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Workshop sessions will cover parliamentary procedures, officer roles, and bylaws writing. The workshop will be especially helpful for club officers, but will also be great for general club members who

are considering future leadership roles.

Michael Fleming of Almont Livestock 4-H Club (not pictured) has been involved with Macomb County
4-H for nearly 60 years. Mike was one of three people to bring a 4-H livestock sale to the Armada Fair. Since then, countless youth have shown and sold their 4-H livestock project at the Armada Fair and the tradition continues today.

Bette Nebel of Clinton Valley 4-H Club has served as a volunteer with Macomb County MSU Extension for over 20 years. In that time, she has been involved with the Clinton Valley 4-H Club, Great Lakes Education Program (GLEP), Summer Discovery Cruises and Master Gardener Program. Her passion for environmental science, nutrition, and youth development continues to benefit 4-H.

Artwork by UCS students chosen to be part of exhibit going to China
The artwork of five Utica Community Schools (UCS) students has been chosen to become part of an exhibit being sent to Shandong Province, China, as part of the 4-H Children's Art Exchange. Local 4-H Family Hosts International Student for 4 Weeks

When City Slickers 4-H Club leader, Michelle Richards, learned about the 4-H International Exchange Program she knew she had to suggest it to her family. Having the opportunity to travel to Europe in both high school and college, she knew that she wanted her daughters to have similar opportunities. This could be that first step to experience a different culture. And so they began the application process.
The family had to fill out an application, describe their family and hobbies, schedule a home visit with an Extension staff person, and ensure that both parents went through the Volunteer Selection
|
Process. Once approved, "We were notified we would be receiving a 14 year old girl named Seohyun -though she is 15 in Korean age. Her packet of information looked like our application with her interests and a couple of photos. An online orientation was required where cultural norms and suggestions to keep our student more comfortable were further explained beyond the packet they provided."
|
After picking up Seohyun from MSU's campus, the 4 weeks flew by with various activities including a 4-H summer camp, a vacation to New Jersey, everyday life with the Richards family, and of course, the Armada Fair!
When Michelle is asked what her family got out of the experience she replies, "All three of my daughters are teaching themselves a language via books and the Duolingo app; two are learning Korean, and one
is learning Japanese. Two daughters already have a strong interest in traveling internationally. They would all like another student next summer. We all hope to visit her beautiful Jeju Island and they all consider Seohyun a sister."

 Winter Horse Projects
Do you love horses but hate fall because it means you'll be stuck indoors soon? Do you think "horse season" is over after the last fall show? Maybe you don't know a thing about horses, but you want to. Come join us to participate in horse winter projects! There are four areas to pick from, and we'd love to have you check them out to see what's right for you. All 4-H members (not just "horse kids") in St. Clair and Macomb Counties are welcome. Meetings are held the first Monday of each month, October through April, at the Goodells County Park Community Building at 6:30 p.m.
Horse Judging:
If you come out of your classes confused and wondering what the judge is looking for, judging is for you. Maybe you already have a lot of "show ring" knowledge and have thought about becoming a judge someday. Come join us too. Through meetings, on farm clinics, and online resources we learn about and discuss criteria for judging halter and performance classes for various breeds and disciplines. Those that want to can go on to compete in judging contests at MSU. Over the past few years, we've had many team members qualify to compete at national horse judging contests, successfully representing Michigan 4-H. This fall, we'll be sending teams to U.S. Arabian Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the Eastern National 4-H Horse Round-up in Louisville, Kentucky. Even if you don't want to compete, I will guarantee you'll come away with a better understanding of what judges are looking for, which will make you a better competitor in the arena. Hippology
: Hippology is the study of all things horse. Check out this project area to learn everything from horse anatomy, nutritional needs, history of breeds, etc. to hands on skills like leg wrapping. Those that want to compete will demonstrate the knowledge they've gained through a written test, stations, slides, judging, skills demo, and team problems. As with judging, this year's team has also qualified to compete nationally and will also be traveling to Tulsa, OK to represent Michigan 4-H. Communications
: Are you passionate about an equine issue? Do you want to educate others about an equine topic? Public speaking and team demonstrations are great ways to spread your knowledge. The top competitors in these categories also have the ability to compete nationally each fall. We'd love to see lots of St. Clair and Macomb County 4-H'ers competing in these areas. Intro. to Winter Projects
: If all of this sounds interesting but you just don't think you're ready to be on a possible competition team yet, or maybe you have no interest in competing but you want to learn horse stuff while having lots of fun, start with an intro to winter projects. Leaders Marianne Moskal and Linda Taylor welcome all 4-Hers to join them in relaxed, fun, and interactive sessions where learning doesn't feel like learning. Various equine topics will be explored with guest speakers and hands on activities. The October meeting will feature a blacksmith demonstration, so come prepared to be outdoors! Assistance League of SE Michigan Mistletoe Marketplace Fundraiser - Nov. 14
|
The Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan is holding a fundraiser, Mistletoe Marketplace, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Palazzolo Grande, 54660 Van Dyke, Shelby Township. Funds raised will support the organization's local community programs.
The Assistance League began in California in 1880. There are 50 chapters in California and other chapters in 29 states. The southeastern Michigan chapter is the only one in Michigan and was founded in 1993. The organization provides

brand new winter coats, hats, mittens, shirts, pants, underwear, books and other items to over 4,000 children in Macomb, Wayne and Oakland counties each year. It also provides help kits to mothers who need them for their new infants, and assault survivor kits for organizations throughout the state of Michigan. The group also has reading programs, provides boxes of food, etc. In addition, the organization has a
resale shop

Outstanding Michigan 4-H members who are involved at county, regional, state, national or international levels are eligible to apply for Michigan 4-H scholarships to help fund their college experience. The Michigan State University applications are due mid-October while species specific scholarships are due by Nov. 1. Applications and more information are available online.

National 4-H Week to be celebrated Oct. 7 - 13
For the 76th consecutive year, millions of youth, parents, volunteers and alumni across the country will
celebrate
National 4-H Week
from October 7-13. This year's theme, Inspire Kids to Do, is a campaign that will give kids more opportunities to do, empowering them with the skills they need to succeed in life and career.
During the 2018 National 4-H Week, Michigan 4-H is encouraging 4-H youth, volunteers, staff and supporters to get out and inspire youth to be True Leaders through hands-on doing. From empowering them to pursue their passions to learning new skills, this October is a perfect time to make a difference for the next generation.

Across the country, the goal of the 2018 National 4-H Week is to reach one million doers. You can help accomplish this by sharing how 4-H has inspired you or your kids to do on social media channels and with individuals in your community. Though every day during National 4-H Week is a great time to show your pride, Tuesday, Oct. 9, is the official 4-H Spirit Day where it is encouraged to wear 4-H apparel to show your 4-H pride.
4-H Youth in Action Award applications due Oct. 22
Sharing your 4-H story could earn you a $5,000 scholarship and a trip to Washington, D.C. for National
4-H Council's Legacy Awards, where you'll have the chance to tell your story while meeting 4-H celebrities and other notable alums.
The 4-H Youth in Action Award program recognizes four 4-H true leaders from across the nation in core pillar areas of agriculture, civic engagement, healthy living and STEM.

NEMIGLSI network calling for student film submissions
The Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (NEMIGLSI) network is now calling for film submissions from youth in grades 8-12 for the Thunder Bay International Film Festival Student Film Competition! Films must address the theme, #ExplorationIs and be less than 5 minutes in length. Selected films will be shown at the Thunder Bay International Film Festival, and prizes are given to winning films. Apply for a Budding Botanist Grant by Nov. 19
KidsGardening and Klorane Botanical Foundation are pleased to announce the opening of the 2019 Budding Botanist grant!
Budding Botanist is open to any Title I public or charter school in the United States. Applicants must be planning a new or expanding an existing school garden program designed to teach students about environmental sustainability and the importance of biodiversity. Grant winners will receive a $500 curriculum and garden tool package, as well as a check for $2,500 to install or expand a school garden.
