 City of Thieves
by David Benioff

 a book review
  by Andy Richmond

There is hardly a more unlikely setting for a rich, rewarding buddy-film type of story than Leningrad under siege by the Nazis, but that is what David Benioff delivers in this engaging book.  While far from a new release, 'Thieves may have been somewhat forgotten since its bestseller days, but is well worthy of first discovery or a re-read!  Framed as a family memory transcribed by the author,  the story introduces Lev Beniov a teenage Russian boy who brazenly stays in his family's tenement apartment after his poet father is executed as a dangerous mind, and his mother and sister flee for the countryside.  He is arrested for theft and curfew violation and held overnight prior to what he is sure will be his own execution.  In a neighboring cell, Lev overhears a young Russian soldier named Kolya who is being held for desertion and likely faces the same fate Lev foresees for himself.  The two are delivered to a powerful Soviet colonel who is preoccupied by his daughter's impending wedding and caught off guard by the two unique personalities whose fate he controls. Intrigued by the pair - a small, sharp-witted Jewish teen and an aristorocratic, blond, romantic, chiseled soldier-he offers the prisoners a slim chance at freedom. Can  they can put their criminal skills and self-confidence to use in procuring and delivering a dozen eggs?  His daughter needs a wedding cake and even the Colonel's position can not make good on that provision in siege- barren Leningrad.
This somewhat comic premise sets the stage for a fascinating and well-researched story that illuminates a dark passage of history and delivers laughs, thrills and horrors.   The pair of thieves wander the almost apocalyptic backdrop of the tortured city and their quest leads to an insightful and gripping adventure.

City of Thieves is available in the RPL print collection, and Beniov's other novels are currently on order.

Health Considerations:
Please make a personal consideration of current health recommendations before browsing or borrowing library materials. We have followed all available guidelines in preparing for our service phases, but sadly, no one can make absolute guarantees of your safety in interacting outside your home. We request that, as with any venture in public, you follow personal and community protective measures, and if you have been experiencing fever or any respiratory symptoms, please stay home and take care of yourself until symptoms subside. We look forward to seeing and serving you in the near future!

From Capri, Italy to Hawaii, Mexico and a dreamy island in Korea, you'll be on vacation in no time...at least in your mind. The expense is minimal - you only need time to read, so...BONUS! Your next ten vacations await!

  • Her Last Flight by Beatriz Williams (Kauai, Hawaii - Irene, a 1937 pilot, goes missing but is found in a surfing village)
  • The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See (Korean Island of Jeju - stunning ocean color, and a decades long chronicle of friendship between two women divers)
