Service Leaders:
Amy McKlindon,
with new members Joseph Benesh, Keith Brown, Lucia de Vernai and Deborah Westwood.
H.L. Mencken said, "It is mutual trust, even more than mutual interest that holds human associations together." How does trust work within a congregation of so many people with such different beliefs? Four of our congregation members will discuss trust within a community setting.

Civic Engagement
- The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) urges ALL to write to their members of Congress to “stop funding abuse” of immigrants who are legally filing asylum claims. You can do this easily here.
- The Welcome Center continues to have very specific needs for food and clothing, all available on their Amazon wish list. They tell us that what they need most right now (from Amazon) are: ground coffee, creamer and sugar; 1- to 3-gallon Zip-loc bags; warm jackets and sweaters; and new socks and underwear (all kids’ sizes, small adult sizes).
- We are no longer accepting donations of food and clothing at our table. We suggest that you donate to the Sojourner’s Center, a well-established and respected “safe haven from domestic violence” for women and children. They accept used clothing for men, women and children. You can call 602-253-9180 to arrange pickup or drop items off at their donation center. More info at www.sojournercenter.org.

Be A Greeter and Get Together
|
This is a chance to meet members and visitors in the lobby on Sunday mornings. It only takes 45 minutes before service for you to participate in this important ministry. And it is easy! The smile is the most important part! You will be trained to handle anything you don’t already know. The optional Get Together to learn the simple processes for being a Greeter will be held on Sunday, Nov. 17th, during first service. Or attend a quick review of processes at 9:00-9:25 or 10:45-11:10 or 12:30-12:55. Attend just one. No sign up or registration needed for these get togethers.
To volunteer please contact Cherie Stafford, cheriecs@gmail.com or 480-200-2345. We are so grateful for all who volunteer.

"Dances From Around the World" Four Hands Piano Recital
|
"Dances from Around the World" Piano - Four-Hands Recital, with pianists Devon Kehler, Astrid Morales, and Masaru Sakuma
Tuesday, November 19 at 7:30 – 9:00 PM
For the last two years, we've been lucky to have Masaru Sakuma as a member at UUCP while he's been completing his doctorate in collaborative piano, and he's finally performing a full piano recital in our sanctuary. Each piece is a dance written for piano four-hands, and Masaru has invited two of his favorite pianists to perform with him: UUCP member Devon Kehler, and ASU faculty associate Astrid Morales.
Admission is free and all are welcome. Doors open at 7:00pm and the concert begins at 7:30. Any donations will be given to the congregation.

November’s Share the Plate is an annual donation to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC), the service arm of the Unitarian Universalist Association with the goal of advancing human rights and social justice around the world. The 2019-2020 theme is “Women Leaders, Strong Communities.”
This year, we are invited to engage with the work of organizations such as Live & Learn Environmental Education Kirbiati
(pronounced Kir-e-bas),
which is helping communities mitigate and prepare for the escalating effects of climate change in the Pacific; Women Peace Network, which is working to uphold the rights of religious minorities in Burma; Foro de Mujeres por la Vida, which helps facilitate mutual support among women’s human rights defenders in Honduras; and Activate Labs in DC, which uses the creative arts to heal trauma and nurture resistance among migrant and refugee communities.

Some interesting facts about our past board presidents.
E. B. Myrick was our president in 1949. He was an electrical engineer and veteran of WWI. During WWII he commanded the Navajo Ordinance Depot outside Flagstaff. Because of a war-time labor shortage he created a Navajo and Hopi village at the depot encouraging Native American workers to move in with their families, giving them well-paying jobs when other employers wouldn’t. He was also a cat fancier and member of the Canyon State Cat Club.

Have you noticed that some members have blue, yellow, or purple ribbons attached to their name tags?
These ribbons, which may say Theological Diversity, Radical Inclusion, or Justice Centered, are areas of personal study available to us in the form of on-demand classes, books, articles, videos, podcasts, social media, and other ways to reflect and discuss each topic. UUCP is in the process of organizing this program for fall 2019. Sign up to get a ribbon and be contacted about classes at a table in the back of the Sanctuary before and after each Sunday Service.
