The Lake Current - August 2020
Welcome to the August 2020 edition of our Council newsletter! As with last month's edition, this will necessarily be brief since so many Council events have been canceled or are still postponed, and there is much uncertainty about what we will be able to do in the future, and when we can do it. But we want to let you know again that the Council is still moving forward and trying to get back to normal as fast as we can.

Our next regular monthly business meeting is this Wednesday, August 12th, starting at 7:30 p.m. We will be serving dinner around 6:30 p.m. Please join us for dinner and the meeting, while observing appropriate social-distancing and face-mask use.

For those who cannot (or do not want to) attend in-person, we are planning to again webcast the meeting live via Zoom. Because our meetings are restricted to the membership, the link to the Zoom meeting will be provided to Council members upon request. Just send an email to our webmaster and he'll send you the link to the Zoom meeting.

Attention Golfers: Below is a notice about our rescheduled annual Golf Outing. If you haven't already made your reservation, do so today! And make sure you let Anthony Falco or GK Ralph know your shirt size so we can place the order.
Amazing Turnout for Our Summer Blood Drive!

Our Summer Blood drive was a little later than usual and had to be by appointment-only because of COVID-19 restrictions. But instead of suffering because of difficult circumstances, we were able to collect an incredible 143 units of blood at the drive held at the VFW on July 10th.

We were never more proud to sponsor this drive, along with the Driscoll Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, Putnam's Bureau of Emergency Services, and Putnam residents serving with the New York City Fire Department. Since its inception 23 years ago, the semiannual Putnam blood drives have collected more than 3,000 unit donations.

Over the last several years, we've held our summer blood drive on the last Friday in June. Summer is always a slow time for donations, and blood is always in demand this time of year. In that light, collecting 143 units is all the more impressive!

Our brother Knight Denis Hanrahan did his usual outstanding job coordinating the drive and keeping it at a high level of success. Denis was quoted in the Putnam County Courier giving due credit to our amazing Putnam County community: The weather was terrible, times are so frightening with the pandemic on everyone’s mind yet once again residents of our county rolled up their sleeves to donate a pint of the life saving fluid.” As always, Denis thanked the public for its support and promised to return after Christmas with the next blood collection.

Join us in thanking Denis for all of his hard work, and thanking all who volunteered to help set-up, staff, and break down for the drive, and of course to all those who made a donation of blood to help save others' lives.

Serving Our Community in Time Of Need

Tropical Storm Isaias hit our area incredibly hard, blacking out almost everyone in Putnam County for days. Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell quickly activated our building to serve as an official county Comfort Station.

As the only Comfort Station in the Town of Carmel, we filled a critical need in our community. Residents without power were able to cool off in our air conditioning, charge their portable devices, watch some TV, and pick up wet and dry ice, and bottled water, as they were made available to us to distribute.

Every day, members of our Council were there to unload the truckloads of supplies, distribute the ice and water, set up our hall for the public, and ensure that everything was kept sanitary to protect public health.

A great big THANK YOU to everybody who donated their time to help out with staffing the Comfort Station!

Fourth Degree News

While COVID-19 restrictions prevented holding the annual Fourth Degree Exemplification in our district, a virtual Fourth Degree Exemplification was held on August 1st. Mother Cabrini Assembly is welcoming 12 new members, including three from our Council: Peter Carey, Jason Poniatowski, and Ray Sulla. They now are worthy of the title "Sir Knight." Please congratulate them when you see them.

MEETING NOTICE
The next meeting of the Fourth Degree Sir Knights will be Thursday, August 20th at our Council. A BBQ for Assembly members will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Please remember to let Worthy FN Vinny know you are coming so he can get a headcount for food.

Please make sure to SAVE THE DATE for our upcoming events!

  • 9/11 Memorial Ceremony: On Friday, September 11th, the annual Putnam County Candlelight Vigil will be held at Spain Cornerstone Park (Route 52 & Fair Street) at 8 p.m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the park will be limited to participants in the ceremony. The public will be able to view the ceremony live via YouTube. Discussions with St. James church may lead to the memorial Mass being livestreamed as well. More details will be announced as we get closer to the date, but look out for information on how to view the ceremony online. This year's ceremony will include the dedication of a tree grown from a seedling taken from the WTC Survior Tree. It will honor those Putnam County heroes in healthcare, emergency services, and essential services, along with the volunteers (many from our Council) who kept us healthy, safe and sustained during this pandemic.

Remember, a full calendar of events can always be found on our website: carmelknights.org under the Upcoming Events tab. And don't forget to "like" our Facebook page for up-to-the minute announcements, photos, event listings, and items of interest.
