Deborah Shipman didn't sugarcoat her intentions.

"We want to keep you from being one of the statistics," she said emphatically to the Native American women and girls who'd gathered in a yurt at Tryon Life Community Farm in Southwest Portland on Saturday morning, Jan. 26.

St. Mary's Center

On January 24, 2019, over 60 attendees were inspired and moved by this year's St. Mary's Center Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration. Seniors shared memories woven around music from the civil rights movement. Jerome M. shard how he was picked up by a stranger one day in the hallway of his Chicago Apartment and found out much later that that the man was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Secret P. shared her life experience encouraging the attendees not to give up, no matter how hard times get, wrapping her story around the song, "People Get Ready" by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions. Connecting yesterday to today was St. Mary's College interns Genesis Contreras and Adriana Inferrero who provided tech support as well as their own presentations on Cesar Chavez's Farmworkers Movement and the March for Our Lives Movement.
