Hibernation. Nesting. Preparation.

With winter comes the impulse to hibernate, to hide indoors from icy temperatures and snow and wait until spring returns. Some might equate hibernation with a stagnancy of action, but not this community. This winter brought activities that drew people from their hibernation and into our village: the first-ever Historic Scavenger Crawl, which partnered our Pro-Port Restaurant Partners and our Chamber, was well-attended and great fun. Port Jefferson Rotary Club's Winter Golf Classic invited people to walk the streets for the entertainment of putt-putt golf and the enjoyment of food and drink. In our Chamber, we welcomed new partners Mr. P's Southern Skillet and Harbor View Day Care at ribbon-cutting ceremonies and new member All Things Digital . Our general membership meeting in December doubled as a holiday party, hosted by The Waterview at The Port Jefferson Country Club, followed by a January meeting at The Holiday Inn Express.

Nesting is the preparation for new life and the coming spring. As your Chamber, we are actively developing and nurturing our partnerships with the many stakeholder groups in Port Jefferson: the Village, the Business Improvement District, the Pro-Restaurant Association, and the Port Jefferson Retailers Association. Together, we're looking to the future, problem-solving and working toward goals to benefit your businesses and the vitality of our village.

Daylight is stretching into the windows of your storefronts and restaurants and offices longer each day, even as wintry weather continues to hit. We'll turn our clocks forward in less than a month. Where do you want the new season to take you? Whether your goals are to build your business, develop connections, or become more involved, joining a committee is a great way to work alongside fellow Chamber members on projects that benefit you and your business. Here are several opportunities for involvement:
  • The 10th Annual Health & Wellness Fest is Saturday, May 18th. 3 Hospitals/ 50+ vendors/ Community Family Fun Run- 2 miles Sponsored by the Royal Educational Foundation/ Sponsorship of your Business possibly?
  • The 6th Annual Dragon Boat Race Fest September 14th seems like a long way off, but not when the preparation has already begun!
Join us February 26th at the Long Island Explorium Children's Museum at 6pm for the swearing-in of new board members, welcoming of new partners, and networking. As your new Chamber President, I look forward to planting seeds with you all as we look to the coming season.

Chamber partner LI Pour House prepared 150 Thanksgiving meals for those in need or just had nowhere to go. The free meals consisted of course of turkey, they went through 14 12 lbs. turkeys, stuffing, potatoes and even some novel choices of mini quiches with tons of desserts.
Thank you Anthony Pallino and your staff for your generosity of food, time, and caring! IN the meantime LI Pour House has re-branded their business and is NOW 'Mr. P's Southern Skillet'.
Congratulations to Anthony and staff!

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), in partnership with the Long Island Sound Study and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, announced a 2018 round of funding for Long Island Sound Futures Fund projects. Thirty-six new grants totaling $2.57 million were awarded, leveraging $3.1 million in grantee match and generating a total conservation impact of more than $5.67 million. Included in this round is our own Chamber Partner
'The Maritime Explorium'. Through their efforts and partnering up with the Village of Port Jefferson they will receive a grant of $43,626 with matching fund of $79,067 to create 2-4 'rain gardens' in lower Port Jefferson by the harbor.   A rain garden is a planted depression or a hole that allows rainwater runoff from impervious urban areas, like roofs, driveways, walkways, parking lots, and compacted lawn areas, the opportunity to be absorbed. The installation will include native plants and be placed in high visibility areas. The natural landscaping will give guidance to our community and improve water quality and biodiversity of the LI Sound.

The Waterview Restaurant at the Port Jefferson Country Club was the back drop to our holiday party this year. The room upstairs overlooking LI Sound added a level of ambiance to the evening. There was a full buffet this year and cash bar. Special entertainment was provided by all female acapella group the 'Jewel Tones'. Their jazzy spin on holiday classics was an added touch to the festivities. 46 chamber partners and friends enjoy networking and having a pleasant social evening.

S ANTA PARADE, RETAILERS SHOPPING CRAWL, 'SHOP SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY' &
THE OPENING OF SANTA'S WORKSHOP

November 24th proved to be a huge day for all. Our Santa parade was once again fortunate to have dry weather and the crowds reflexed the popularity of this parade. Retailers started off the holiday season with giving out offers to entice those early shoppers to purchase their gift items. All under the umbrella of the American Express marketing campaign, 'Shop Small Business Saturday'. If you needed a break there was the opening of Santa's Workshop. A visual wonderland for all ages that finished with Santa for photo opportunities!   With so many things happening be aware that our Santa Parade will change from being on that Saturday after Thanksgiving to Sunday that same weekend, so December 1st is the 2019 date and the time will also change to 3pm. The 24th Annual Charles Dickens Festival is the following weekend December 7th & 8th.

HISTORIC RESTAURANT SCAVENGER CRAWL
January 26th

NEW event sponsored by the Chamber and partnering with the Pro-Port Jeff Restaurant Group happened January 26th on a cold but dry and sunny day! 260 participants walked to 12 different restaurants to partake in some hot beverages and lite bites. The thematic event revolved around the strong history Port Jefferson Village has. Attenders were asked to answer a historic question at each stop based on a reproduction of a photo that represented that business many years ago. All who answered all the questions were eligible to enter a raffle. Four people won multiple gift certificates to those restaurants that participated. Winning recipients were from, Patchogue, Setauket, Port Jefferson and St. James. Thank you to the following Chamber Partner who contributed to this fun crawl: C'est Cheese, East Main & Main, Fifth Season, harbor Grill, Locals café, Nantuckets, Pasta Pasta, Roger's Frigate, Starbucks, Steamroom, Slurp Ramen and Tommy's Place
