Social Determinants of Health in HIV Care for American Indian/Alaska Native Adults

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities have long been disproportionately impacted by the HIV epidemic with AI/AN infection rates increasing by 70% between 2011 and 2016. The CDC recently published an article on behavioral characteristics of American Indian and Alaska Native people living with HIV. The article paints a demographic picture of those living with HIV, but potentially more importantly calls attention to the social determinants of health and risk co-factors exhibited by those that participated in the study and justifies a more comprehensive wrap around approach to HIV services Read the full article from CDC here.

NIHB Community Changemaker Grants for Native Youth-led Health Projects
Applications accepted until funding is gone! Apply ASAP.

American Indian and Alaska Native youth ages 14-24 years old are eligible to apply for The National Indian Health Board (NIHB)'s Community Changemaker Grants. These are small amounts of money ($250) that can help supercharge a YOUTH-led and YOUTH-planned health event. Read more here.
CDC Public Health Associate Program Host Site and Associate Applications

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Public Health Associate Program (PHAP) is a two-year, paid training program with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Associates bring their skills to the host agency, foster a partnership between their host site and CDC, facilitate access to CDC resources, trainings and subject matter expertise, and build Tribal capacity by filling human resource gaps. In return, the Tribe will offer the PHAP associate opportunities to grow as an early-career public health professional. Public Health Improvement Training (PHIT): Submit your Abstracts now!

Abstract submission is now open for the Public Health Improvement Training (PHIT), a conference produced by the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in partnership with several national organizations including the National Indian Health Board (NIHB).

PHIT is an excellent opportunity for Tribal, state, local, and territorial health departments to share their experience in performance improvement, system improvement, and public health accreditation. Presentations should be geared towards practical skills, increasing specific knowledge, and sharing effective resources.

Food Safety Mini-Grant Opportunity
Due Friday, February 8th
 
The National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will offer mini-grants between $1,200 to $3,000 to support state, Tribal, local or territorial governmental food safety programs to learn more about the National Environmental Assessment Reporting System (NEARS) program. NEARS is a surveillance system that captures environmental assessment data from foodborne illness outbreak investigations in retail food services to improve food safety programs.  Read more here.

Public health practitioners, researchers, and policy experts are invited to submit proposals for workshop and roundtable sessions for the 2019 National Tribal Public Health Summit. NIHB encourages presentations highlighting evidence-based, best, wise, or promising practices developed in and for Tribal communities. NIHB highly encourages dynamic, interactive sessions that will draw upon the skills, knowledge and experience of session participants. Scholarships Available for Environmental Health and Climate Change Presenters at Tribal Public Health Summit
 
NIHB is pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships this year for presenters on the Environmental Health and Climate Change Track. Conference admission fees will be waived and scholarship recipients will also receive up to $1200-$1500 to support travel costs. If you are interested in a scholarship, please submit your proposal here . Then, email aaljanabi@nihb.org to request a scholarship and please include a brief explanation of why you need, or could benefit from, this scholarship. Scholarship applicants should not book travel without coordinating with NIHB, as NIHB may coordinate with scholarship recipients to make travel arrangements on their behalf.
Nominations for the Native Public Health Innovation Awards & Native Behavioral Health Award (Hope & Healing Award)

In an effort to honor individuals, Tribes, organizations, and programs that have enriched and improved American Indian and Alaska Native public health and behavioral health, NIHB invites nominations for the Native Public Health Innovation Awards (three awards honoring different types of work) and the Native Behavioral Health Award (Hope and Healing Award). All nominations should be received by 11:59 pm ET on Friday, February 15, 2019. Winners will be notified within three weeks upon close of the nominations. Read more here .

NIHB invites Methamphetamine and Suicide Prevention Initiative (MSPI) and Domestic Violence Prevention Initiative ( DVPI) grantees, Tribal behavioral health experts, public health professionals, advocates, researchers, community-based providers, and others to submit proposals to highlight the accomplishments of their programs at the American Indian and Alaska Native National Behavioral Health Conference, in Albuquerque, NM, May 15-17, 2019. The Poster Session is a great way for success stories to be heard by a large audience of Tribal leaders, Tribal behavioral health professionals, health experts, public health professionals, federal employees, advocates, researchers and community-based providers as well as share program ideas with others. NIHB invites Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) grantees to submit proposals to highlight the accomplishments of their programs at the National Tribal Public Health Summit (TPHS) in Albuquerque, NM from May 13-15. The poster session will be held during the opening reception of the Summit on the evening of May 13. SDPI presenters are also invited to volunteer to lead a fitness session on Tuesday, May 14. Climate Opinion Maps 2018
 
The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication hosts maps based on opinion data. Public opinion about climate change is an important influence on decision making about policies to reduce global warming or prepare for the impacts, but American opinions vary widely depending on where people live. This tool allow users to explore beliefs, perceptions, and policy support for climate-related issues nationally or in states, counties, congressional districts, or metro areas. Read more here.
Report on Motor Vehicle & Pedestrian Safety

A new report from Smart Growth America describes the state of pedestrian fatalities and emphasizes the need to build safer streets. The report includes important stats on how AI/ANs are disproportionately impacted by pedestrian deaths, and spotlights how the Kalispel Tribe in WA state is addressing this disparity. Converging Voices Workshop: Building Relationships and Practices for Intercultural Science

The 7 th annual workshop of Rising Voices will be held in Colorado this May. The Rising Voices program facilitates cross-cultural approaches for adaptation solutions, climate variability, and climate change.
