CITY OF EDMONTON APPROACH TO SUPPORTING SENIORS' CENTRES 2019

At the January 30 Community and Public Services Committee meeting, the City of Edmonton Approach to Supporting Seniors' Centres 2019 report was presented for information.

The document outlines the City of Edmonton's approach to supporting seniors centres which will replace the Seniors' Centres Plan 2011-2021 following its expiry in 2021.

The approach considers challenges such as sustainability, volunteer capacity, program/service delivery, and metrics as well as opportunities such as inclusion and intergenerational connections. Four strategic directions are outlined:
  • Strategic Direction 1: Update the Current Funding Model
  • Strategic Direction 2: Foster Inclusive, Responsive, Innovative and Measurable Practices
  • Strategic Direction 3: Foster Sustainable and Equitable Services and Programming
  • Strategic Direction 4: Focus on Relationships and Partnerships
The City's administration team committed to two phases of implementation for the Approach to Supporting Seniors' Centres. In phase one they will consult and engage seniors sector stakeholders, including ESCC, in an advisory capacity to determine the best way to implement strategic directions 2, 3 and 4.

The Committee asked Administration to return with a report of phase one in September of 2020. At that time the City's administration team will be asked for plans for the funding model (strategic direction 1), which would comprise phase two of the roll out of the approach.
