Congressman David N. Cicilline (D, RI-1), the sponsor of the AMIGOS Act (H.R. 565) and a co-chair of the Portuguese-American Congressional Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Congressman's office has announced the passage of the AMIGOS Act (H.R. 565) by the House of Representatives with unanimous support. The purpose of the bipartisan legislation is "to increase trade and investment ties between Portugal and the United States by making Portuguese nationals eligible for E-1 and E-2 nonimmigrant visas. H.R. 565, which will make it easier for Portugal and the United States to do business with one another, now heads to the Senate."
The press release goes on to state that "t
he bill now moves to the Senate where a bipartisan companion bill has been introduced by Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Pat Toomey (R-PA)." Senators Whitehouse and Toomey are members of the Senate caucus, Friends of Portugal in the Senate, co-chaired by Senator Toomey and Senator Jack Reed (D-RI).
Other co-sponsors of the AMIGOS Act (H.R. 565) include: Rep. Jim Costa, Caucus Co-Chair (D-CA-16), Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA-22), Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA-17), Rep. TJ Cox (D-CA-21), Rep Zoe Lofgren (D-CA-19), Rep. William Keating (D-MA-9), Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX-18). All are members of the Portuguese-American Congressional Caucus.
PALCUS was instrumental in the establishment of the Portuguese-American Congressional Caucus in the House of Representatives and the Friends of Portugal in the Senate in 1995.
