March 2018

Greetings all!

Like me, you are probably still confused by the weather challenges thrown, blown and dropped on us by Mother Nature so far this spring! Be assured that eventually she will be ready to take a rest and allow Maryland's usual lovely spring to "bust out all over"!

In this newsletter there are activities coming up for crafters, gardeners and farmers that will keep you busy while you wait for "real" spring!

Z is for Zucchini!
LaTasha Coleman, Extension Educator

FSNE (SNAP-Ed) has preschool students screaming "I LOVE Zucchini!" in 15 pre-k and kindergarten classes at Ferndale Early Education Center, Hilltop Elementary, and Belle Grov e Elementary. These preschoolers are currently participating in FSNE's Edible ABC's weekly nutrition education lessons. Trained classroom teachers deliver short 20-30 min lessons that include tasting a new food, learning how it grows, and completing a letter home to their family about the new food. You can find this curriculum and more on our Eat Smart   website:
Do you have a plant question? Pests in your house? Not happy  with your lawn? The University of Maryland Home and

Vegetable Garden Planning: What Doesn't Start From Seeds
Maryland Grows Blog

As you're planning your vegetable garden for this year, you're probably thinking seeds, seeds, seeds. But not everything in the garden needs to begin with seeds. In some cases, plants started by someone else are a convenient or even economical choice. And some crops, like potatoes, are grown from last season's tubers rather than from seeds.

Healthy Eating - Bread in a Bag

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 package rapid-rise yeast
3 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons nonfat dry milk
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup hot water (125 to 130 degrees F)
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup whole wheat flour
Boiling water

Combine 1 cup all-purpose flour, undissolved yeast, sugar, dry milk, and salt in the 1-gallon heavy duty freezer bag with zipper-lock. Squeeze upper part of bag to force out air. Shake and work bag with fingers to lend ingredients. Add hot water and oil to dry ingredients. Reseal bag. Mix by working bag with fingers. Add whole wheat flour; reseal bag and mix thoroughly. Gradually add enough remaining all-purpose flour to make a stiff dough that pulls away from bag. On floured surface, knead dough 2 to 4 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough; rest 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, roll dough to 12 x 7-inch rectangle. Roll up from narrow end. Pinch edges and ends to seal. Place in oiled 8 ½ x 4 ½ x 2 1/4-inch glass loaf pan; cover. Place large shallow pan on counter half filled with boiling water. Place baking sheet over shallow pan; let dough rise 20 minutes or until double in size. At this point, bread can be taken home to be baked at 375 degrees  F for 25 minutes or until done. Remove from pan and cool on wire rack. Slice with serrated knife to serve.
