February 2019
Dear Fellow Deans,

Greetings from Garden City, New York!

It was such a joy to catch up with so many of you at our deans' conference earlier this week! This annual get-together has always been an energy booster for me—providing new ideas and insights and reaffirmation of why we do our jobs. Hope your trip home was smooth.

I share here some of the latest work that has been keeping us on the go at Adelphi.

Sincerely,

Rajib Sanyal, Ph.D.

IMPACT—Insights From Faculty Research

The latest edition of our Adelphi Business Review is out! To make the scholarly work of our faculty accessible to a broader audience, we created this biannual e-journal. It "translates" a selection of their recent academic research into succinct and easy to understand pieces. You will find the stories in the current issue insightful. They range from what helps women entrepreneurs succeed, to how advertising can successfully connect a product with a consumer's proclivity toward it, to why international mergers and acquisitions may not always work out, to how airlines' baggage fees have led to an unintended (positive) consequence—improved on-time flight performance.
ENGAGEMENT—The World Is Right Here in New York City!
Capitalizing on our proximity to the No. 1 most influential city in the world , students participated during the winter intersession in an innovative undergraduate course that drew upon the city's economic and cultural riches, immersing them in a global experience without having to cross borders. The country focus of the course was China. Classroom sessions at our Manhattan Center were complemented with meetings with business executives at Voss Water and J.P. Morgan, attendance at a cultural performance, a visit to the Museum of Chinese in America, and culinary experiences in Chinatown. The students and the course were assisted by six of our M.B.A. students from China, who served as cultural liaisons. This course offered convenient, cost-effective, cross-cultural engagement to students who cannot afford to, or are unable to, study in a foreign country.
INNOVATION—Getting Ready for a Career in Finance

Responding to recent changes in the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam—the passing of which is a vital first step to a career in the financial securities industry—we are supporting our graduating finance students to successfully take the exam. We have partnered with an external test preparation vendor to provide our students all the coaching and tips they need to succeed. Students do not have to pay for this, thanks to the generosity of our alumni. Along with a lab equipped with Bloomberg terminals, a student-managed investment fund of nearly $375,000 and a robust internship program, this SIE Exam preparation opportunity further solidifies the preparedness of our students for careers in finance when they graduate.
