Wendy Grahn and Maggie O'Brien
Entering its 5
th
year on Broadway in Lakeview, Lakeview Kitchen and Market (3109 N. Broadway) is a one of a kind find in the neighborhood. It offers 5,000 sq. feet of fully equipped kitchen space to about 40 small businesses who focus on food. About 15 of those food companies sell their product up in the market space. Everything you buy in the market, is made in the kitchen. Small batch, local sourced items made by companies who specialize in that very item.
Wendy and Maggie, the owners, are a mother/daughter team, who after 4 years working side-by-side, day-by-day, still love each other very much. ;)
Wendy has a background in communications and training and left the corporate world to join Maggie in this adventure. Maggie is the Executive Pastry Chef for
Velvet Dessert. She's producing some of the best croissants in Chicago, according to many of the market customers.
Some of the things learned over the last 4 years? You can never have too many sheet trays. Hobart mixers DON'T last forever. And getting 40 different companies to keep the back door shut is trickier than you may think. It's also extraordinarily satisfying to watch small businesses grow and people follow their passions.
