Dear School of St. Mary Parents,

We are planning on making up one of our snow days on Friday, March 1, 2019.  In order to accommodate Parent-Teacher Conferences that were scheduled for that day and Friday, on Thursday, February 28,  will have an early dismissal at 11:45 am at the PGC and 12:15 pm at the UGC. We will then have Parent-Teacher Conferences from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at both campuses.  Friday, March 1, will be a regular, full day of school. Kiddos Catering will move Thursday's scheduled lunch to Friday. If you are unavailable for Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, February 28, please reach out to your child's teachers and they would be happy to schedule an alternative day and time.

Our second snow day will be made up on Friday, June 7, 2019, which will now be the last day of school. Thursday, June 6 will be a regular, full day of school. Friday, June 7 will be an early dismissal day, with the PGC dismissing at 2:00 pm and the UGC at 2:20 pm.  All activities, such as Activity Day at the PGC and Field Day at the UGC, will now take place on that Friday.

Our students in First through Eighth grade heard an outstanding concert/assembly this morning put on by the School of Rock Highwood and Evanston.  The assembly was about the History of Rock and Roll. Our students and staff learned about the influence that jazz, country and western, and rhythm and blues had on rock and roll.  In addition to learning about music history, our students and staff heard songs by B.B. King, Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan among others.  School of St. Mary Eighth grade student Ciara Carroll, who is also a student at the School of Rock, was invited up and got to play the drums for the song Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry.  Fifth grade teacher Katie Darraugh got to play tambourine with the band when they played Revolution by the Beatles.  By the end of the assembly, students were on their feet dancing to famous guitar riffs throughout rock history.  Thanks to the School of Rock Highwood and Evanston for a fun and informative morning!

If your child is missing an item of clothing, hat, gloves, shoes, etc., please check the lost and found at both buildings.  We have accumulated quite a bit of "lost" items and are running out of room to store things. We are going to donate what goes unclaimed to charity.

The School of St. Mary will celebrate St. Valentine's Day on Thursday, February 14.  Students may wear pink or red tops with their uniform bottoms (pants, skirts). If students choose not to wear pink or red tops, they are expected to wear their regular school uniform. This is NOT a casual or dress-down day. No blue jeans, etc.    Students may wear pink or red socks.  Staff members can ask students to change out of anything inappropriate or too distracting for class

Just a quick note, our next Coffee with the Principal that was scheduled for Friday, February 15 has been cancelled. Unfortunately, I am out of the building that day.

Notice on Late Arrivals
School of Saint Mary Community,
Please know that we value our students' presence in their classrooms as much as you do as parents. When students arrive late, they miss out on essential instructions given at the beginning of the lesson. This can significantly reduce achievement, regardless of academic ability. Your child may also feel awkward arriving to the classroom when everyone else is settled. Furthermore, when one student arrives late, it can disrupt the entire class and the teacher.

This past Monday, the UGC Office recorded 56 late arrivals. We understand that there can be situations that are out of everyone's control. However, having a large number of students enter the building after the bell can create unnecessary work and chaos for all. Please help us to continue providing a consistent and valuable, Catholic education for the entire school community by being punctual. We appreciate your efforts and sacrifices made in order to ensure student achievement and success here at the School of Saint Mary.
God bless,

Finding a Healthier Perspective for grades 7 and 8

This week, the School of St. Mary welcomed Monica Bullock, from Simply Bee Counseling  for a presentation on Finding a Healthier Perspective for our Seventh  and Eighth   grade students. This presentation focused on how our body image develops and factors that influence it. Monica discussed strategies for creating a more positive body image with our students.  Students and staff enjoyed the presentation and we hope to have her back to present in the future.
Catholic Schools Week in Review
Though our Catholic Schools Week Celebration was impacted by the weather, we none the less continued to have a wonderful celebration of Catholic education at the School of St. Mary. All grades participated in many different activities inviting families and friends to experience all of the reasons why we love St. Mary. From book reports to geography bees, from special recipe presentations to gym activities, our students were able to showcase their many skills and talents for all of our family and friends. Thank you to all who came out to support our students during the last two weeks. Below you will find a brief video highlighting some of the events that occurred during Catholic Schools Weeks.

Geography Bee
On Wednesday, we held our Annual Geography Bee at the Upper Grade Center. Students in grades 4-8 competed in their Social Studies classes to determine the finalists. Those finalists competed in front of their families, friends and teachers during the Geography Bee in the UGC gym. For the second year in a row the winner of our Geography Bee was Eighth grader Sean Kupperman. The runner up was Fourth grader Anderson Peters. Congratulations to all of our participants in this great competition.
