Steps Closer to a Dream
Community Development Commission
Approves $4.25M TIF for Paseo Boricua Project
When artist and poet Eduardo Arocho moved to Humboldt Park in
2004,
he envisioned a pla
ce where local artists could thrive and create, long before live/work space was widespread.
On Tuesday his dream gain
ed momentum when Chicago's Comm
unity Development Commission app
roved $4.25 million in tax-increment finance (TIF) money for 2709-15 W. Division Street. Plans for the project include a theater with commercial space and affordable housing on Humboldt P
ark's Paseo Boricua - the stretch of Division Street from Western to California
Avenue - home to businesses rich in Puerto Rican cult
ure.
Arocho's dream gained momentum
in 2014 when he was Executive Director of the Division Street Business Development Association. Jose Lopez, Executive Director of the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce, supported by 26th Ward Alderman Roberto Maldonado, obtained a $2.5 million loan from the Belmont Bank for the PRCC to purchase the seven buildings on Division Street with a five-year strategic plan to revitalize and spur economic development of the area. There are still hurdles to jump, including approvals from the Department of Planning & Development and the City's Committee on Zoning, but the vision is clearer, the dream closer.

The Benefits in Hiring
An Independent Contractor
There are more than a few reasons why hiring an independent contractor makes sense for an established business. Among them flexibility re
hours and not having to pay when work isn't available; outsourcing special projects so you don't have to set up a new department within your company, and saving money on benefits and payroll tax liabilities. Overall it's important to know when it makes sense.
