T-Bird Tip of the Week: Social Media Awareness for Students
|
Thanks to technology today's students can share ideas, opinions, pictures and videos with the global online community in a matter of seconds.
Sharing is good, except when it isn't. If we aren't thoughtful about how we share, we run the risk of hurting ourselves or someone else.
This year the Baraboo School District is posting a series of weekly tips, the "T-Bird Tip of the Week."
Parents, talk to your students about each weekly tip. Students, be mindful of your online identity. Let's start the conversation!
T-Bird Tip of the Week:
A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes.
Once a lie is out there in cyber land, it's hard to take it back.
People like drama. Drama can be exciting, shocking, funny, thrilling...it produces an emotional reaction.
People are looking for a shared experience. We want to connect with others, and we do so by sharing an experience that produces an emotional reaction.
People like to think they are in-the-know. We like to feel like experts on a subject, even when we're not! We like to feel informed and feel pride in sharing our information with others.
People are more likely to share something outrageous. We often tune in for the initial outrageous story, but then lose interest before finding out more details or verifying the details.
But details are important! Details clarify a situation and give context to a story. Details delve deeper and provide more truth than the original sensationalized story. But, since people are more likely to share something outrageous, once they find out the full story they are less likely to share those details with others, which allows the lie to continue to spread while the truth is struggling to catch up.
Be a good digital citizen when it comes to sharing on social media. Do your homework before you spread information. Think:
1) Is this a rumor or gossip?
2) Is the source credible?
3) Has this been verified or is this speculation?

Annika Christensen Wins District Spelling Bee
|
The Baraboo School District held its annual Baraboo District Scripps Spelling Bee on Tuesday, January 15th. Thirty-eight students in fifth through eighth grade qualified for the District Bee.
To qualify, students in 5th grade first had to compete in their individual classrooms. The top winners of the classroom bees went on to compete against each other in their elementary school bees and the top two winners from each elementary school then went on to the District Bee at Jack Young Middle School. JYMS students qualified by out-spelling their classmates at the middle school level, and then moving on to the district level.
Congratulations to eighth grade student Annika Christensen and seventh grade student Hunter Tikkanen who took first and second place respectively at the Baraboo District Scripps
Spelling
Bee. They will compete in the regional Scripps
Spelling
Bee in Portage on February 6th.
The group of spellers battled through words like garbanzo, unguents and auf Wiedersehen, and these two really showcased their
spelling
chops. Malachi Ulrich, sixth-grade student, took home a hard-fought 3rd place finish.
Congratulations to all who participated! Good luck Annika and Hunter!

This week, the first grade students of North Freedom Elementary School created their own phone as a part of their wave unit in science. They learned how sounds travel through air and into the ear while exploring with different materials. It was great to see the teamwork and engineering skills among the students!

The Baraboo School District continues to welcome volunteers within each of our schools.
In order to best support our numerous school volunteers, we are offering another volunteer training at West School (707 Center St.) on February 4 from 3:15-4:00 PM.
School volunteers from any of our schools are welcome to attend this training to better understand the role and dynamics of a school volunteer along with receiving some information about school district volunteer expectations. The volunteer training is completely optional and open to all school district volunteers. Thank you to our many school volunteers and community partners for all of the ways you support and impact each of our Baraboo schools.

4K Registration for 2019-20
The 4-Year-Old Kindergarten (4K) Registration within the Baraboo School District for the 2019-20 school year will be any time between 7:00 am. and 4:00 pm. on Tuesday, April 2nd at East Elementary (815 6th Street, Baraboo) if your child turns 4-years-old by no later than Sept. 1, 2019. (Please bring your child's birth certificate to 4K registration along with proof of residency). You may contact District Registrar, Kristine Snow, at 608-355-3955 or

The 4-year-old kindergarten (4K) program also known as BELC (Baraboo Early Learning Cooperative) will be beginning it's 12th year of programming in the fall of 2019. Please note that BELC is a half-day program for 3.17 hours on 4 days (M, T, Th & F) each week with many parent outreach opportunities. Our BELC AM session runs from 7:55-11:05 am., and our BELC PM session runs from 11:50 am. - 3:00 pm. Any 4K student would need to qualify for transportation based on the location of their residence outside of the Baraboo city limits, and 4K transportation is only provided during our afternoon sessions. We do not typically offer a second year of BELC to an individual student as 4K is meant to be a one-year program for all of our students.

Family Literacy Night Set for Feb 28

East Explores With STEM Night
|
East Elementary School students and families were treated to a STEM night at East in January. The STEM night focused on student hands-on activities to highlight Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Students enjoyed the opportunity to build, create, test and challenge different approaches to tasks and creations.
The East staff hosted this event to help support the creativity and problem solving skills many students naturally enjoy and some kids need to explore and be exposed to in engaging methods.

Baraboo Hosts Japanese Students
|
Nine students and four teachers from Iwaizumi High School in Iwaizumi, Japan joined host students from Baraboo High School and the Wisconsin Dells High School for a week of living like an American student. Four of the students stayed with host families in Baraboo and attended Baraboo High School for a week, attending classes, school activities, and sporting events as the guests of their host students. Guests students did everything that their hosts did in classes, and one student even took home a souvenir of his name welded into metal, courtesy of Mr. Hanusa's welding class.
In Japan, it is culturally important for people to exchange gifts when visiting another's home, so the Japanese students brought small tokens for each of the members of their host family (including some exotic candy from Japan--strawberry-cranberry-
almond Kit Kat bars!) In return, the guest students took things to remember the high school and the Baraboo area, like uniform patches from the Baraboo police and EMS departments, BHS sports shirts and jerseys, books, and lots of American candy.
During their week living with Baraboo students and families, the Iwaizumi students toured the Milwaukee Public Museum, the State Capitol, the Kalahari resort, the Baraboo Police Department, and many other local destinations. The exchange students enjoyed life at Baraboo High School and celebrated with a farewell banquet on Sunday, before leaving Baraboo at 5:30 in the morning to return to Japan.
Several Baraboo and Wisconsin Dells students participating in this cultural exchange will visit Iwaizumi this summer, and become exchange students themselves. The next opportunity to be a part of this fascinating program will come next winter.

Candidates must either be a teacher or substitute teacher licensed by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). For information on how to apply for a substitute teaching license, visit the DPI website.

Mrs. Allaby's 4th grade class at Gordon L. Willson Elementary school celebrated their win for round 2 in Ms. Nolden's school-wide Art Competition for being Safe, Responsible, and Respectful.
They earned a class full of fun printmaking using shaving cream, paint, water, and chalk!

Seniors Complete Senior Exit Interviews
|
On Wednesday afternoon, ten Baraboo High School seniors who are graduating early engaged in a Senior Exit Interview, after they completed a reflective portfolio.
The portfolios provided examples of work that showed student growth, a personal statement, a career plan, a resume, and a final reflection paper.
Eight school and community members assisted with the interviews, which allowed the graduating students to reflect on their time in Baraboo School District and the growth they have achieved.
The remaining 2019 Senior class will be interviewing the morning of May 15th. Please contact our district office if you are interested in being an interviewer!!

Diversity 101 Training Offered On Jan. 31

UW-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County is offering its first session of "Diversity 101" from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. on January 31, 2019, at the Baraboo Campus in the Science Bldg, Room A001.
This free training will cover basic key terminology, scenarios, and inclusive practices as they relate to diversity and inclusion.
