Gore Mountain Slated to Open Saturday, November 17

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the start of the 2018-19 Alpine and Nordic ski seasons. Gore Mountain in North Creek, Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, and Belleayre Mountain Ski Resort in Highmount are all slated to open this Saturday, Nov. 17. 

Nordic skiers can also look forward to Saturday's openings at Gore's Nordic Center in North Creek and Lake Placid's Mt. Van Hoevenberg.

"New York is the proud home of world-class outdoor recreational activities that attract millions of visitors to this great state all winter long," Governor Cuomo said. "With over 50 world-class ski resorts across the state, I encourage everyone to come discover all the Empire State has to offer."

All three resorts, operated by the Olympic Regional Development Authority, began their snowmaking operations last weekend and have been making snow around the clock preparing for Saturday's opening.


Gore Mountain has also overhauled its snowmaking system, setting the resort up to deliver the snowiest season ever. More than 300 brand-new snow guns have been added to the fleet, while new piping and a pump house will increase water pumping capacity by as much as 42-percent. This allows Gore to open more trails earlier and expand terrain faster.

Gore is also finishing a large two-level addition to the base lodge that doubles the size of the Tannery Pub & Restaurant. The newly added space will seat up to 350 people and offer year-round facilities for banquets, weddings and conferences. The lower level addition houses the brand-new headquarters for the popular season-long Mountain Adventure programs for kids and more seasonal lockers.

Gore Mountain Recognized for Battling Climate Change

Gore Mountain was among six organizations that  were recognized with Environmental Excellence Awards during a ceremony at Skidmore College earlier this week.  Gore has a 25-year purchase agreement to obtain power from a large 1,500-panel solar array and is also committed to ongoing snowmaking efficiencies and widespread use of LED lighting.

WSWHE BOCES Executive Honored

John Rieger, a Fort Edward resident who is currently President of the Board of WSWHE BOCES, was recently honored with the New York State School Boards Association's top award, the Everett R. Dyer Award for distinguished service at the association's annual convention in New York.  Under Rieger's leadership, WSWHE BOCES has strengthened and streamlined its special education program, expanded employee professional development opportunities, rebranded its Adult Education and Career and Technical Education divisions and created the Early College Career Academy.

STEEAM AHEAD Opportunity for Students, Teachers, Citizens

STEEAM AHEAD is a unique one-day mini-conference on November 30 at SUNY Adirondack, developed to celebrate and infuse a spirit of creativity and innovation into the realms of science, technology, engineering, entrepreneurship, arts and math (STEEAM). The day's activities will include a keynote speaker and three different workshops, with lunch provided! 


Pre-registration is required. STEEAM AHEAD is open to students, faculty, staff and community members ages 17 and older.

VETCON 2018 to Provide Veterans With Opportunities

The Tully Rinckey Foundation will present its third annual Veterans in Economic Transition Conference (VETCON) on November 27-28 at the Desmond Hotel in Albany.  VETCON is the continuation of a groundbreaking alliance first started in 2016 seeking to assist veterans in their transition from service to everyday life, by focusing on providing financial tools, resources and support. 


VETCON will draw more than 60 state agencies to its matchmaking session, along with owners of veteran-friendly businesses interested in growing their state government portfolios.

Personalization Coming to Consumer Packaged Goods Industry

Retailers and familiar household brands may soon know individual preferences at the same level as Spotify knows an individual's playlist. Market research firm Nielsen (the parent company of Gracenote, a local Warren County employer) and Microsoft aim to produce this information by partnering to produce Nielsen Connect, which brings Nielsen and third-party data on CPG industry sales, pricing, media buying and other things together in one place on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform.
