Did you know the Decennial Census is only 18 months away?
|
We are launching "Count the Region" - an initiative to get out the count for 2020 Decennial Census in Northern Virginia and to ensure that everyone living in the region is counted, counted once, and counted in the right place.
Many large federal assistance programs such as highway planning and construction, the National School Lunch Program, Section 8 housing assistance, Head Start, and many other programs that support and sustain the social and civil fabric of our community, distribute
funds to states based solely on decennial census-driven statistics. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that for every individual in Virginia who is not counted, we will lose $2,000 per year for 10 years, or $20,000, in federal assistance program allocations.
It is our hope that the Community Foundation's involvement in this initiative will help energize our community around this important endeavor that has profound implications in our region for the next 10 years.

1st Stage, in Tysons Corner, receives 1st grant from newly created Ross-Roberts Fund for the Arts
|
Earlier this month, we launched a new fund - The Ross-Roberts Fund for the Arts. Its mission is to celebrate, promote, and support the arts in Northern Virginia.
Thanks to a generous donation from Stephen Roberts and his donor advised fund, the Sue Goetz Ross and Stephen S. Roberts Music Fund, this new fund is endowed as part of The Permanent Fund for Northern Virginia, forever able to make grants to support the arts in our region.
To kick it off, the Community Foundation convened a volunteer panel to review Letters of Intent submitted by local arts organizations and awarded $10,000 to 1st Stage, a professional theater company located in Tysons Corner, to support its capacity building and strengthen its development and education initiatives.

For their history of passionate leadership and philanthropy, Ellen and Jim Dyke were recognized with the 2018 Community Leadership Award at the Raise the Region Gala held on Friday, October 5th at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner.
The Community Foundation raised $636,000 and hosted more than 650 business leaders, philanthropists and community organizers at this year's event. It also celebrated its 40th anniversary, with more than $50 million in grants and scholarships distributed to respond to critical need and seed innovation in our region and beyond since its inception in 1978.

The Loudoun Impact Fund, a joint initiative of the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia and the Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties, awarded a total of $125,000 in grants to 16 charities serving Loudoun County through the generosity of almost 50 individuals and businesses that pooled charitable gifts. Loudoun Impact Fund members decided 2018 grantmaking would address youth, disabled, and elderly charitable needs.

Giving Circle of HOPE, a component fund of the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, has invested more than a million dollars in the Northern Virginia community since its founding in 2004. It awarded $56,000 this year after reviewing 25 grant requests to further the aims of nonprofits working to improve the lives of those in our community.

Stephen Roberts, a donor advisor for the Sue Goetz Ross and Stephen S. Roberts Music Fund, recently made a legacy gift to help launch the
Ross-Roberts Fund for the Arts. We asked him to share some thoughts on how this new fund helps honor his wife's legacy.
Why did you choose to help the Community Foundation establish the Ross-Roberts Fund for the Arts?
I am honored to be able to assist in the launch of the Ross-Roberts Fund for the Arts at the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. The arts (in our case singing classical music) brought me and my late wife Dr. Sue Goetz Ross together and then gave us many years of pleasure and enrichment together. The arts are an essential part of the life of any community, bringing it both beauty and identity and giving it its human spirit. I can think of no better way to support the arts in Northern Virginia over the long term than to help launch a new fund at the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia dedicated to the arts.

We shared with you here previously how we love working with individuals, families, and professional advisors to carry out their legacy in the community.
One smart way our donors ensure their charitable goals are honored into the future, is to set up a
donor advised fund. In doing so, donors work with our team to create a plan that provides donations to an issue they are passionate about or that might even support a specific nonprofit they want to sustain. The assets left in that account can be invested, amplifying giving impact.
Donor advised funds make continued giving simple and possible. The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia's team and Board of Directors offers the added layer of monitoring the grantee organizations for their continued alignment with the donor's principles. We take donor intent very seriously.
