Adult Classes in Sunday School
Drop in, or come each week.
Kerygma:   Parables. Jesus' parables are always a challenge. They seem both simple and enigmatic at once. Kerygma uses an approach to their study which is engaging and informative. We will look at the overall nature of parables, and then in subsequent two weeks, delve more deeply into particular ones. Led by Dr Duane Hix, Room 102.
Bible and Beyond:
This coming Sunday the Bible & Beyond Class will conclude their study of the book of Ruth, which has been based upon the Uppity Women of the Bible video course by Dr. Lisa Wolfe.  A new study begins on February 24 and runs through April 7: The Seven Last Words of Christ, led by John Page. This will be a careful and considerate look at the import of what Jesus uttered on the cross
Faith Today :  T his class continues the study Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times , a video-based course with Adam Hamilton. This course is for anyone who desires to live as a peacemaker in troubled times, or for those struggling with fear, anxiety, or worry in the face of what's happening in our world. Led by Jerry Slaymaker, Room 100.
Faith and Families: for people raising families in faith in a complicated world, currently studying Animate: Faith, in the Fellowship Hall. This week's topic is on-the Bible! 'A Book Like No Other.'
Adult I : Our Love of God continues through February with the study of passages from I Thessalonians, the epistles of John and James, Philippians, and Psalms. Parlor.

Mister Rogers Continues
The 2018 film Won't You Be My Neighbor reminds us of the good in the world and that individuals, with others, can make a positive difference in lives. We're offering two sessions for discussing the film and the man: (1) Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. for an overall discussion of Roger's theology and approach, and (2) on Sunday, Mar. 3 at 6 p.m., focused on parents or grandparents. Each session will be in Room 100.

Children and Worship
Children and Worship leaders are a key part of our ministry to 4 - 7 year olds. We need more leaders trained now to guide our children in experiencing the presence of God. This is a crucial need.
Children in Worship happens during the first 40 minutes of the 11:00 a.m. worship service before the children return to the Sanctuary for a time of greeting, singing, and Bible passage presentation and response. Then, everyone is present for the last third of the service. Please contact Medora Hix to inquire further. Training is scheduled at your convenience.

Vacation Bible School
Change is coming! Everyone clear your calendar now for an all-ages Vacation Bible School; not in June, but July 14 - 18! Not just for children, this is Pilgrimage, recreating life in the Middle Ages, exploring the lives of biblical and medieval saints who lived out the teachings of Christ. There will be separate Pilgrim guilds for children, youth, and adults, as well as craftsmen and others providing experiences and learning in five European lands (England, Italy, Scotland, Spain, and Ireland). Save the Date!

Learn How to Use
the CPC Kitchen

Immediately following the 11:00 a.m. service this coming Sunday, February 17, the Kitchen Katz will offer a short session on the use of the equipment in the kitchen to anyone who is interested in the proper procedures. We plan to offer this training again in March.

It's time for the
2018-19
Driver's License Milestone

This short class for one parent and a new driver will be held at conclusion of Youth Sunday practice on Saturday, February 23 (starting approximately 11:30 a.m. to noon) in the church library. The recognition of the Milestone will happen in worship during Youth Sunday, Feb. 24. The class is mandatory for the recognition.

(If you have received your driver's license since last Spring or will do so within the next few months, this Milestone is for you!)

This is an important part of a young person's journey to full maturity. As people of faith, we understand that God's presence and will is involved in all of life, whether secular or spiritual. This simply cannot be separated. So this coming of age event is one place to stop and connect with the Lord of the universe.

Please let our Director of Faith Formation, Medora Hix, know if you can accept this invitation:  [email protected] . Looking forward to seeing the new drivers and parents!

Cool Books Club News

The Cool Books Club will meet on March 5 at 7:00 p.m. at Peg Giesbrecht's home to discuss The Holy Man by Susan Trott.  (This book is not available in the public library, but there are many inexpensive copies available online.)

A brief summary from Goodreads: They came from far and wide to see the Holy Man, to find new direction in their lives. They walked away freed from everyday anxiety and forever changed by simple words of wisdom so powerful, yet so universal, that their stories are an inspiration to us all. The Holy Man, an acclaimed national bestseller and beautiful piece of inspirational fiction, is a warm and witty collection of modern fables reflecting on the human search for happiness.

Congregational Meeting: January 27, 2019

Here is a summary of the Budget & Finance presentation at the congregational meeting on January 27:

2018 Highlights:
  1. We finished 2018 with a surplus of $34,000
  2. Total planned giving for the year was $654,703, which is 99.3% of the total amount pledged
  3. We had an increase of $13,000 in income over the amount budgeted
  4. On the expense side, most teams spent slightly less than their 2018 budget
  5. All mission gifts were made; we spent 100% of missions budget
  6. The surplus of $34,000 will be used to:
    1. A small portion will be used to balance the 2019 operating budget
    2. The remainder will be added to unrestricted general reserves
  7. At the end of the year, we have $98,000 in our capital improvements reserve, $20,000 in vehicle replacement reserve, and $186,000 in unrestricted general reserves
  8. Remember, we have been mortgage and debt free since December 31, 2015.
2019 Notes:
  1. The 2019 Operating Budget is balanced and was approved by Session on January 21, 2019
  2. The budget was presented to the congregation for informational purposes. There were no terms of call to approve since both pastors have contracts with 6-month terms
  3. Our final 2019 Generosity results are as follows:
    1. 194 family units pledging for a total of $661,088
    2. 15 new pledgers, and the average pledge is $3,408
    3. Both the pledged total and average pledge increased slightly over 2018. This is the first leveling we have seen of our downward trends over the last four years; very good news indeed!
    4. We also have had a tremendous giving response to mission items outside of our operating budget such as: ASP, Guatemala missions, Guatemala student scholarships, Alternative Gift Market, Disaster Relief, etc. Plus two huge, relatively new missions with a lot of volunteers: Food, Friends and Fun, and Be the Hands.
    5. In 2018, the monetary value of all of our "outside the budget" missions giving was in excess of $45,000, and was also an increase over 2017.

We are extremely grateful for the continued generous and faithful support of our members and friends. This support is critical to the success of our ministry and mission within our church, our community at large, and the greater world.

If you have any questions, please contact Barbara Carew, finance manager, at [email protected] or any member of session.
