OHSS Leadership Team

OHSS was launched by compassionate advocates for integrating social sciences into One Health strategies for improving health systems. We thank founding co-chairs Jennifer Ida, and Lisa Webb for their commitment, leadership, and innovative ideas. OHSS would not exist without their efforts. Going forward, OHSS will broaden leadership from a co-chair structure to a Leadership team.

The 2019-2020 OHSS Leadership Team is:

Helena Chapman, MD, PhD, MPH
Bernardo Moreno, MD, MSc
Verónica Ormea DVM, MSc
Laura C. Streichert, PhD, MPH

OHSS Webinar

“The Added Value of Anthropology for Integrated Control of Neglected Zoonotic Diseases in the One Health Movement”

Dr. Séverine Thys

Tuesday January 21 2020
10:00 am EST (UTC-5)

Dr. Séverine Thys recently completed her PhD at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University in the Department of Virology, Parasitology, and Immunology. She previously worked at the Department of Public Health, Institute of Tropical Medicine while being based at the One Health Collaborating Center, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta (Indonesia). Séverine does research in Medical Anthropology, Public Health and Veterinary Medicine. Her current project is on the One Health management of Rabies in Bali within a socio-ecological approach.

Dr. Thys will discuss the added value of conducting a socio-anthropological study for improving the understanding of the barriers faced to control Neglected Zoonotic Diseases (NZDs). In addition to a practical and reflexive description of the interdisciplinary approach used, she will describe the socio-cultural drivers of the results in three case-studies: Cystic echinococcosis in Morocco; Taenia solium Taeniasis/cysticercosis in Zambia; and Rabies in South Africa. The presentation will conclude with a general discussion through a cross-case analysis and general recommendations.
