We have another long weekend ahead! There are so many ways to enjoy a three-day weekend: a family trip, a college tour with your junior or senior, or time at home to catch up on work.
Our students are in the midst of selecting courses for next year, and the long weekend offers a perfect opportunity to
review and discuss some
helpful information provided by Langley staff and FCPS
.
Over the next month,
each student at Langley will have a one-on-one meeting with his or her counselor to register for classes. I would like to
highlight two resources
that may be helpful as your student prepares for the counselor meeting. First, FCPS has a detailed page illustrating
high school class sequencing, which can be viewed
here. This page lists requirements for standard and advanced diplomas and
shows potential class sequencing in all required subject areas: math, science, English and social studies. I hope you will find this a useful tool when making a master plan for the high school years.
Were you unable to attend the
Langley Curriculum Night? Not to worry! The Student Services Department posted
teachers’ presentations, which can be found
here. Take a moment to peruse the link, where you’ll find descriptions of
class expectations, homework load and project requirements for general, honors and AP courses in all of the major subject areas.
I hope you find these resources helpful, and note that you may always contact your student’s counselor if you have further questions.

Ms. Betsy Jones is a much loved biology teacher at Langley. She was an “Army brat” growing up, and lived in England and Germany as well as the US. She played basketball in high school and college, and also learned how to play soccer in college.
Ms. Jones did not start out as a teacher.
She started substituting at her kids’ school
and fell in love with teaching, so she went back to college and majored in biology and behavioral science. Ms. Jones says her biggest accomplishments in life are her three kids, and her best teaching accomplishment is helping students to be more successful.
Her advice to students is to
“put your phone in another room while you’re working!” She explains that if you’re checking your phone every five minutes it adds to the time it takes to do homework. Ms. Jones also advises students to
“be proud of who you are (you don’t need to be anyone else)!” She believes in having a balanced life— a little work and a little play. In her own spare time, she loves to watch sports, particularly baseball, football, hockey and college basketball.
