The Important Role of Tech in Closing the Degree Attainment Gap

Many of the available jobs in today's market require a college education. We currently have plenty of students opting to pursue higher education but very few are leaving with a degree. There is a major disconnect between the attendance rates and the graduation rates at four-year colleges and universities. It is shocking that only 32 percent of students enrolled in colleges complete their degrees within six years at open-admission universities. Our education system needs to do something to help close the significant degree attainment gap.

Improving Community College Completion Rates by Addressing Structural and Motivational Barriers

Community colleges have the potential to provide students across the United States with viable pathways into good-paying jobs. However, many students who enroll in community college in the United States do not complete a certificate or degree. Specifically, fewer than 40 percent of community college students earn a certificate or degree within six years of enrollment (Bailey et al. 2015). Individuals who do not complete any type of certificate (also referred to as a credential) beyond a high school diploma face dramatically reduced earning potential.
