Lake Nona Middle School

The campus will be quiet this week (March 19-23) as our students, teachers, and staff are away on a well earned Spring Break. Classes resume on schedule Monday, March 26.

You will find our "weekly success indicator" averages in a table below for the third quarter which closed out this past Thursday. Our attendance rates remained better than goal across the board and we experienced fewer overall tardies to class during the school day thanks to our 6th and 7th grade Knights. However, tardies to school in the morning increased again last quarter as it did during the preceding period. This is an opportunity for this last quarter of the year. Thank you to our parents for checking in on ProgressBook during the week. We exceeded goal here on this important indicator which allows progress tracking from home at any time.

As for this last issue of the quarter, it was built around student recognitions. We have included a few additional pictures of our Knights in this edition as they have recently enjoyed successes in a number of areas ranging from the performing arts to STEM to every day classroom rigor. Their teachers and the administration are very proud of our Knights' efforts and I think you will enjoy reading a little bit about their achievements.

Please take special note of the upcoming OCPS Parent Academy on March 31. Have a wonderful week and enjoy the beautiful springtime weather!

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Knight College

AVID 6th & 8th graders, along with Latinos in Action students, visited the Lake Nona Valencia College campus on March 8th. While on the college tour, students visited a bio tech lab where they extracted the DNA of a strawberry. Students also participated in their "First day of college" with our professor for the day Jessica Farnan, the immersive experience coordinator. Students learned more about all the campuses, degrees, and programs offered by Valencia college. Students were also informed on how they can soon start college via the dual enrollment program that accepts middle school students as well.

Knight Music
Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band earn Superior ratings . . .

Please join us in congratulating the members of our Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band on outstanding performances at our Music Performance Assessment (MPA) on Friday! Both groups earned a Superior rating from every adjudicator! More importantly than the rating, both bands played with very high levels of musicianship, distinguishing them apart from every other band. We are extremely proud of our students and all of their hard work this year! Our band director, Ms Hannah Jennings, also deserves a standing ovation - take a bow Ms. Jennings!

More Knight Music . . .
Thank you for your kind support this past quarter . . .

Hello Parents,

Thank you for supporting our students in their third 9 weeks piano recital.

We are making progress on our playing and presenting to others and we hope you have seen improvement in our students from last 9 weeks to this one! Pictured at the very top of this issue is a group photo, but if you attended the recital and might have even better ones, please pass those along.

Again, thank you for supporting our students as they strive to become better musicians. It is always exciting to watch each student progress through the year!

Thank you,

Mrs. Majka

Knight Rigor in the Tech Classroom
Pi Day '18 in Ms. Ward's ICT class

Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π. Pi Day is observed on March 14 since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π. What makes pi so special? Our scientists and engineers use this special number to learn about moons, planets, stars and other spherical bodies. Our students learned about Pi in Ms. Ward's ICT class with a Pi Day typing test that included  information about Pi. Their finished product was a Pi Day PowerPoint with their Smarties chart to create a pie chart and cropped pictures to answer questions about Pi day.

Science Sun Games - Rigor "Outside"of the Classroom . . .
Knights rolled out their science sun projects last week . . .

The science sun project is all about clean energy and creative students. This is a forum for students to demonstrate their science, technology, engineering, artistic and mathematics knowledge and skills as they relate to energy topics.
  • The Critter Comfort Cottage (images below) is for students to utilize energy-efficient  green building designs and construction techniques to create the most cost-effective, comfortable "home" for a critter.
  • The Solar Energy Cook-Off (images below) is for teams of students to design, build and test the best oven design and be the top solar chefs.
  • The Solar Sprint has students designing and building a small model car powered entirely by solar energy and steered by wires.

A tasty snack prepared on one of the solar ovens pictured above!

Parting Shots of the Week . . . "Knight Blast"
Big Blast Party to thank the students for their fundraising efforts . . .

The Big Blast Party is the ultimate awards program for a successful fundraiser in the PE classes. Instead of merchandise prizes for rewards, the students came to an event where they had lots of fun and many lasting memories. The event  was held at the school soccer fields where there were several giant inflatables, table top games, arcade games, refreshments, and a DJ who played their favorite music.

Coach Hernandez and Assistant Principal Wood entertained the students with the Bouncy Horse race with AP Wood falling off the horse.Coach Hernandez was the real victor. In AP Wood's defense she explained, " I would have won the race if I had had tennis shoes for a better grip on the dry grass." Sure, Ms. Wood!

Enjoy your Spring Break Knights. I look forward to seeing everyone back on campus Monday, March 26th for a successful on time start to the 4th and final quarter of 2017-2018!
