Mardi Gras Celebration

Dear Parents and WCA Community,

We are thrilled to announce our French Celebration: Fêtons au Carnaval on March 5!
The tradition and festivities of Mardi Gras started back in the 18th century in the settlement of Fort Louis de la Mobile, in what is now known as the state of Louisiana. By the 1730's, elegant balls were held in New Orleans. One hundred years later, Mardi Gras Celebrations evolved as a carnival theme with the procession of maskers. In 1875, Governor Warmoth signed the ''Mardi Gras Act'' and declared this celebration a legal holiday.

The Mardi Gras Carnival was not the only tradition brought by the French colonists. In 1854, another carnival was held in North America, Le Carnaval de Québec, in the province of Quebec in Canada. The cold climate in Quebec did not prevent people from warming up with the festivities.

At World Compass Academy, we will create a festive atmosphere for Mardi Gras. All World Language students will make props and necklaces during the week of February 25. French students will perform during a school assembly on Tuesday, March 5, at 1:30pm in the gym. Parents are invited!

On Mardi Gras, what can a student wear? March 5 is a Formal Uniform Day for our students. Students are allowed to wear beads (can be worn all day) and bring a mask (to be worn ONLY during the assembly).  French students ONLY are allowed to wear a solid colored top in gold, green or purple (with blue or khaki bottoms).

We need volunteers to help with this celebration... SIGN-UP HERE!  We hope you can join us and laisse le bon temps roulé...let the good time rolls!

Au plaisir de vous voir bientôt...pleasure to see you soon.

Mme Nikanorov and Mme Maurice

We Need WCA Ambassadors!

Do you love WCA? Are you always telling your friends and family about our amazing school? We need YOU! We are looking for a few WCA parents to act as WCA Ambassadors to promote our school within the community. Responsibilities would include: "liking" and sharing WCA Facebook/Instagram posts, hosting information tables at community events, handing out WCA swag, displaying the WCA window decal on your car, etc. All of your time would count towards your family's 15 hour volunteer requirement.

Complete this  FORM if you are interested. Please note that your name and contact information will be shared with WCA staff and parent volunteers. Thank you!

State Testing (CMAS) Coming Up in April

Be sure to mark your calendars to avoid scheduling conflicts Spring CMAS tests are annual state tests that all public schools are required to administer to students. Don't worry, our teachers are preparing our students everyday through regular daily instruction, so no need to do anything special to get your student ready for these tests!

These are, however, important and valuable tests, so we are aiming for 100% participation! We use CMAS data (now that the test is several years old and has been vetted) to help us identify the targeted needs of individual students and to inform flexible grouping decisions. The more students who take the test at World Compass Academy, the more accurate that data is for each student at our school. We also use CMAS data to improve overall school performance. And state testing provides an objective report on how WCA is doing while keeping us accountable to YOU, our parents.

Because it is an important test, we are asking parents to avoid scheduling non-emergency appointments for students in grades 3-8 on CMAS testing dates.

Grades 3-8
(ELA & Math)
April 9-11

Grades 5 & 8
(Science)
April 15-17

For more information, please see our "State Mandated Testing" Tab on our website. You may also email Krystal Taylor with any questions about testing.
