Peet Junior High becomes a RAMP School!
Peet Junior High was recently recognized by ASCA (American School Counselor Association) for becoming a Recognized ASCA Model Program! Peet is the 1st Cedar Falls school to be designated a RAMP school and the 10th school in Iowa! Rebecca Lins will be honored this summer at the annual ASCA conference in Boston.
Being a RAMP school uses a framework for a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program that includes many components including providing services to students, parents, school staff and the community in the following areas: direct student services, school counseling core curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services and indirect Student Services

Congratulations to AJ Jackson, senior trumpet player, on being offered a full-time position in one of the US Marine Corps Bands! AJ made it through three rounds of auditions to win a spot! All enlisted Marines go through the same basic training course before beginning their jobs. AJ will complete 13 weeks of basic training, do a one month combat training course and then has been invited to go to a six-month music school course. After completing all of his requirements, he will then be eligible to be stationed with any of the Marine bands throughout the United States. Members of the Marine bands are stationed throughout the world and perform more than 300 times a year. AJ is currently a member of the CFHS Marching Band, Wind Symphony and Jazz One.

Know Your Constitution Competition
Know Your Constitution Competition involves a multiple choice quiz and short essay for students in grades 9-12 on the U.S. Constitution. Winning entries are selected from each of Iowa’s 100 legislative districts. The selected students and their teachers are honored at a special luncheon in January where five students and their teachers are selected to attend a week-long program in Washington, D.C. through the Close Up Foundation. This year Moira Buie, along with her teacher Traci Lake, were drawn for one of the five trips to Washington DC, she also was a finalist for the exceptional essay award.

Summer CF CAPS Program
Through the support of a grant from Iowa's STEM BEST program, CF CAPS is launching a summer program tied to entrepreneurship and innovation. The 20-day program will be from mid-June to early July for half days and housed at business partner locations in Cedar Falls. Current Sophomore and Junior students at Cedar Falls High School will earn two high school credits for being a part of this program. CAPS Enterprises will be instructed by Nate Clayberg, CF CAPS Business and Career Development Director.
The Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) Enterprises course is designed to meet the needs of students interested in solving problems, creating products and/or starting and running a business. This unique CF CAPS course will equip students with the skills of an entrepreneur and innovator. This immersive experience empowers students to frame opportunities using entrepreneurial tools for solving problems, product development, business modeling and agile project management that assist in developing an entrepreneurial mindset to turn ideas into action.
Course projects will not only include those related to student product and business ideas, but will also include external private clients as well as the CAPS program. Student-Associates will collaborate with mentors and business partners in a real business environment away from the school campus as part of this course. The development of professional skills, career exploration and problem solving abilities are important areas of focus for all CAPS courses.
Details on dates, times and location are being solidified. The program will be limited to 10-15 students.

Nominate a deserving teacher for Gold Star Award for Outstanding Teaching
! Each year the McElroy Trust selects ten incredible teachers from hundreds of nominations submitted by students, parents and teachers themselves. Then they hold a loud, flashy awards ceremony where all of the stars’ fans can whoop it up and cheer them on! To top it all off, they give each Gold Star Award recipient $1,000 in cash and a $500 classroom grant to be used for their work space!

The Cedar Falls Lions Club is seeking nominations for an exceptional educator who goes above and beyond to create opportunities that foster student growth, embodies civic action and engages others in service, and inspires and promotes a spirit of life-long learning. A candidate for this award must be a full-time practicing pre-K-12 teacher or administrator in the Cedar Falls Community School District, Valley Lutheran School, or St. Patrick Catholic School. If you are an administrator, staff member, student, parent, or community member who knows such an educator, you are invited to submit a nomination. Educators may not nominate themselves. The recipient of this award will receive $500.00 and a plaque recognizing him/her as the Cedar Falls Lions Club Outstanding Educator of the Year. The deadline for submitting nominations is March 1, 2019.
Nominations will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
• A demonstrated commitment to service learning, including engagement of students in service to the community
• A collaborative style that is responsive to diverse student, parent and community interests and needs
• A record of character development that reflects service to others and the promotion of kindness and generosity within the school and the community
• Strong leadership and involvement in promoting initiatives that result in educational excellence
• A record of advocating for student learning; a champion of education.
