Long Grove E-Newsletter Edition 37                           January 31, 2019

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Waste Management (WM) will not be making any refuse pickups today (January 31, 2019) due to the extreme and unsafe weather conditions. Please note that WM will resume refuse pickup services on Friday and Saturday of this week, and plans to collect all refuse in Long Grove by the end of Saturday. WM will not be picking up recycling for the rest of this week, and will resume recycling pickup during the normal residential pickup day the week of February 4. The company will collect any extra recycling items that residents put out.

Additionally, residents should avoid unnecessary trips and stay inside if possible today, due to continued record-low temperatures and wind chills. Please visit this link for more information and tips you can follow to stay safe.

In this newsletter, you will find an update on a Waste Management rate increase and a new service provided for residents; both of which are part of the new waste hauling contract with the company. Tips on what to do (and not to do) when you encounter coyotes, and an update on efforts to repair and restore the Robert Parker Coffin Road Bridge are also included. Information on how to fight Teasel and how to join CERT are provided, in addition to details on the Cocoa Crawl hosted by the Historic Downtown Long Grove Business Association this Saturday in downtown Long Grove. Additionally, please see the community calendar below for a list of upcoming Village meetings and events.

Thank you,

Fighting Teasel is as Easy as 1-2-3
Teasel Rosette
Teasel is a highly invasive plant that is taking over roadsides in Long Grove, that is pushing out native plants that feed and protect wildlife and beautify the Village. Early spring is a critical time to attack it. Below are things you can do to help:

1. Spray Teasel rosettes with the broadleaf herbicide 2,4-D which can be purchased at local home centers, hardware stores or garden centers, and will kill the roots. Young rosettes can also be dug and pulled out when the soil is moist, with the aid of a long dandelion wrench; it is important to get the entire long root out of the ground and then to bag securely for disposal.
Teasel Stalks
2. Cut existing Teasel stalks at the ground level and be sure to bag them securely for disposal, since they can have seeds. Spray the remaining stalk stump with a broadleaf herbicide, otherwise it will just re-grow.
Native Grasses
3. Plant native grasses and flowers after killing and removing Teasel. This will prevent its return. For additional information, visit

WM New Contract, Service
and Rate Increase
The new contract with Waste Management (WM) will go into effect tomorrow, February 1, 2019, and will  include electronics recycling (E-waste) as an added service for residents. WM will now be  picking up E-waste once a month, on the first Monday of the month. The first E-waste pickup will be Monday, February 4 - residents will need to contact WM at least 2 business days prior to the pickup date to schedule E-waste pickup for the month. For this first E-waste collection by WM, please contact the company by Friday, February 1 to schedule your pickup at 800-964-8999.

Residents are strongly advised to remove or erase the memory off of any computers or other electronics, and can simply place them at the curb; smaller items can go in a box, and larger items, such as televisions, can be loose. WM will accept up to 10 items, including one (1) television, one (1) monitor and eight (8) smaller items. Other than this added service, WM will be providing the same high level of service that residents have become accustomed to over the last two decades. With the new contract, there is roughly a 17% increase for residential rates; click here for more information. The rate increase is reflected on invoices from WM that were sent out on January 15. Coyote Sightings Increase
in Long Grove
Coyotes have begun to make their presence known in Long Grove in recent weeks, while the peak of their mating season (when they are most visible) will be in late February and early March. Coyotes resemble a medium-sized dog, but their noses are more pointed, and their tails are bushier than most dogs. They typically weigh 20 to 40 pounds, but can weigh up to 55 pounds.

Residents should remember to use sidewalks and designated trails when taking walks, avoid feeding coyotes, and always keep dogs on a leash when walking them. Food should not be left outside the home, and garbage cans should be securely closed so as not to attract coyotes. Additionally, pets should not be left outside unattended, and residents should be extra vigilant around fences because coyotes are climbers. If a resident or pet has been bitten by a coyote, or if a sick or injured coyote is observed, please contact Lake County Animal Control immediately at 847-377-4700 . For more information about coyotes, visit lakecountyil.gov , and search ' Coyotes '.
Robert Parker Coffin (RPC) Road
Bridge Update
Plans are in progress to prepare bids and other requirements for abutment replacement, and steel repair and painting, for the Robert Parker Coffin Road Bridge. At the January 22, 2019 Long Grove Village Board meeting, a contract to handle these bid requirements was awarded to ESI Consultants, Ltd. (ESI), and plans for this work are expected to be completed by mid-April. After that time, the project will be publicly bid.

Another part of this project is the replacement of the Bridge's timber cover. The Village Engineer is currently negotiating the Architectural Services contract with responsive bidder ESI, for the Village Board's consideration in February for this work as well. The goal is to have both projects completed simultaneously, which will help to integrate the design and construction of the Bridge.
Consider Joining CERT
