Dear Friends of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue,

We are passionate about our work to help the Labs we rescue become whole in body and spirit. Each Lab's health needs, simple or complex, are addressed by our top-notch vet partners; each is lovingly fostered until we can them find just the right forever home.

This is a huge undertaking for our all-volunteer rescue. Imagine the vet bills for all those sweet Labs, many of whom are neglected, hurting, sick or never had any veterinary care. It's no wonder their medical care is our greatest expense.

Please join us in our mission to provide compassionate and high-quality care for our rescued Labs by including Safe Harbor, a 501(c)3 public charity, in your year-end giving plans. Our modest adoption fees cover only a small portion of the costs to ready Labs for their forever homes. We rely on the generosity of Lab lovers to help bridge the gap.

Together what a difference we can make for these wonderful Labs who truly deserve a second chance.

Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season!

Believe! By "Belle"
'Tis the season for believing in miracles!  I can tell you miracles really do happen, if you believe hard enough. Not long ago I was left at a shelter when my family couldn't care for me anymore.  I'm a seven-year-old girl with a limp, a chubby 97 pounds, and was left with a note saying I had "metal in my hip". I wagged and smiled in my kennel, but the days turned into weeks . . . . who would ever adopt me?

As I sat in my kennel, I really believed and believed with all my h eart that a miracle might happen for  me, and guess what? It did!

Safe Harbor welcomed me! Their vets discovered I had an old hip injury, and broken leg that was kind of a painful mess. The "metal" was pin in my leg bone that protruded out an extra four inches into my muscle (ouch!), and there was also a chuck of broken off bone stuck in my hip socket. I'm recuperating with my doting foster mom from two surgeries to make things right.  Thanks to Safe Harbor, I'm a true believer in miracles!

Dear Labby: To Do's To Keep the Holidays Happy!
Dear Labby is ready to offer advice on all matters Labby from both four and two-legged folks.

Gentle Readers,

We Labs are the original party animals and LOVE this festive time of year! It can get a little overwhelming though and it sure seems like there are tons of Don't Do's:
  • Don't eat chocolate, turkey bones and food wrappers.
  • Don't chew on electrical cords or snag stuff off of the tree's lower branches.
  • Don't send burning candles flying off the coffee table with your wagging tail.
  • Don't eat wrapping paper, ribbon, tinsel or assorted holiday plants like mistletoe and poinsettias.
  • Don't tinkle on the tree . . . the list goes on longer than a tennis ball thrown into the next county!
So, Gentle Reader, I thought I'd focus on the positive and provide some TO DO's  to share with your family:
  • Keep to our regular routine; it's comforting.
  • Provide us with a quiet, safe place to go when company comes over and we need a break.
  • Keep to our regular diet no matter how much we beg. Be strong!
  •  Keep the lid on the trash can.
  • Let guests know what we're allowed and not allowed to do.
Love, Labby

Do live in the moment and be happy and celebrate!

New Beginnings: Cally
Not too many Labs in Colorado can brag that they have a job at their new mom's marina lined up for next summer! Lucky little one-year-old Cally has found her forever home with Robin, and while she's very excited about being home for the upcoming holidays, Cally is going to make sure she stays in swimsuit shape over the winter so that she can be the first one in the water when the marina opens for the season.

Robin sent us a couple of updates on her new girl:

Cally is such a love.  We are getting along great.  She is learning new stuff every day. She is really smart. She enjoys going for rides. I have a car and a truck -- she seems to prefer the truck. We will be doing a lot of driving in the summer so this is good news.

Cally is doing really well. She wants to please so badly. She learns really fast. She is a busy little one. Loves Toys. She is going to love working with me at my Marina next Summer. She acted like the snow we recently got was the first she had seen. Really cute.  Thank you so much Safe Harbor.

Many thanks to Gloria for fostering Cally!

Volunteer Spotlight: Margo Boyer
Be sure to purchase your very own Safe Harbor Lab Rescue Calendar before the year is up. As you are flipping through the calendar admiring the fun Lab photos, you can thank our December volunteer spotlight, Margo. She designs the calendar. Margo's favorite part is getting to review all of the amazing Lab photos submitted.

Margo has volunteered for almost ten years as our graphic designer. Safe Harbor Lab Rescue was looking for a graphic designer to help promote our rescue, and Margo volunteered and has been helping ever since.

In addition to designing the calendar, Margo creates the LabFest flyers, Year-End Fundraising materials and Christmas cards. Our rescue is lucky to have such a talented and dedicated volunteer!

In addition to her design work, Margo has also adopted two labs from Safe Harbor Lab Rescue - Sam and Lilly. After losing Lilly a year ago, Margo was keeping an eye out on some of the bonded pairs that have come through the rescue. We are happy to report that Margo and her husband are now hospice fosters for our most recent bonded pair, Jake and Duke! Because of her kind heart, Jake and Duke get to live the rest of their lives together at Margo's home. As you can see from their picture, they were all meant to be family.

Thank you, Margo for all of your years of volunteering!
