Puerto Plata Recicla (Recycles) is a new initiative to promote healthy environmental habits throughout the province and to bring recycling to the North Coast. DREAM, along with partner schools and business owners, cleaned four beaches in Puerto Plata this past January 25th. This campaign brings awareness to our youth, business owners, and local government as we all work together in favor of our most precious commodity. DREAM has focused for the last year on creating the most eco-friendly organization possible, collecting plastic bottles, organizing community clean ups and adding environmental protection to our curriculum. We are excited to join this larger movement!

Global Connections Kicks Off 2019!
Our Global Connections Volunteer Program has launched 2019 with the Clarksville Academy, a Spanish speaking group of high school students learning about Dominican culture, history and education. They have been working with our Sports for Life (HIV/AIDs, sexual health, and leadership education) youth trainers, as well as learning about the DR through educational excursions. We expect more than 25 groups this year, adding more than US$250,000 into local communities and forming impactful connections.

LUCEROS Hosts Dynamic Workshops
Our LUCEROS team started 2019 with continued work on the delayed declaration process of undocumented Dominican youth. In coordination with the Regional Ministry of Education of Puerto Plata (MINERD), we conducted four workshops for the directors and administrators of 63 schools within the school district of the city of Puerto Plata. The dissemination of the resources and information will have a crucial impact on the effort to reduce the population of undocumented students on the North Coast. ¡Avanzamos!

This month DREAM staff participated in a two-day First Aid training presented by volunteers from the International Red Cross (Cruz Roja). Seventy-six employees received training in basic first aid principles including emergency protocols, risk management, wound assessment and treatment, and CPR. The training included classroom instruction and hands-on practice at the DREAM Center. A big thanks to our volunteer instructors who traveled from Santo Domingo!

Youth Ambassadors Off to the US
After their
pre-departure orientation in Jarabacoa, DREAM and the US Embassy's amazing
Youth Ambassadors set off on January 22nd for Chicago, Illinois and Bettendorf, Iowa. There,
the ten students and two adult representatives from Bonao and Jarabacoa met up with participants from three Central American countries. Over the next three weeks, participants will develop their leadership skills through professional workshops and field visits focusing on the environment and social entrepreneurship. Students arrived safe and sound with their host families and are excited to learn more about other cultures!

Phoenix Tower International
It is not often that DREAM partners with a true industry leader. As far as philanthropy has come over the last 10 years in the DR, few corporations recognize our lagging education system as a critical area to improve.
Phoenix Tower International is an exception in every way, immediately supporting our innovative work and representing the very best in corporate social responsibility. Thank you, PTI Team, for this unique vision and your support for more than 9,000 young learners!

Five-year-old Alexa is one of our vibrant young Montessori students. Already in her third year with us, she has such a positive influence in the classroom! Alexa knows how to read, how to add, is always very kind with other students and works well both in groups and independently. One of the things we love about Alexa is that she is always ready to learn new things and never hesitates to help her classmates, especially the younger ones, with their work. She is a a leader already and we can't wait to see what amazing things she accomplishes in her bright future!
