The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany:
|
|
TONIGHT: Come Check Out the Inklings Class!
Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in the Parlor
|
|
Come join the Inklings Forum tonight at 7:00 as we begin our study of C.S. Lewis’s
The Silver Chair, part of the beloved
Chronicles of Narnia. Is it a marvelous children’s story about a lost prince? Or is it a fictional reworking of Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave,” with nods to Anselm and Descartes? Or is it a parable about following Jesus that is particularly applicable to 21st century America and the idea of Truth? Of course, the answer is that it is ALL of the above, one of the reasons it is a work of genius. All are welcome!

Do Not Be Afraid:
Ministry Through Music
by Myla Roper, Canterbury and St. David Chorister
“Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you.
I have called you by your name; you are mine.”
|
|
Our St. David Choir’s presentation of Henry Purcell’s anthem “Do Not Be Afraid” on Sunday resounds as a powerful testimony to an ever-present God who as protector and shepherd watches over us and endows us with strength to overcome fear. God’s watchfulness can be understood as that of a railroad conductor overseeing our movements and protecting us as we travel over flat, hilly, and mountainous life experiences on our daily sojourns. We are assured in this anthem that God will guide and shield us to help keep on the track of righteousness. Building on God’s supervision and oversight are the earthly works of goodness and guidance daily carried out by our rector Jeff Miller, our musical director Mrs. Jo, the St. Philip’s Church clergy and vestry, the church’s congregation, and the well-wishers who support St. Philip’s Church.
The anecdotal accounts of all my friends, of the St. David Choir members of St. Philip’s, bear testimony to the valuable effects that participation in the singing of “Do Not Be Afraid” bestowed on us all. Rhett Andrews, a bass in the St. David Choir, said that he got chills when the descant began. The choir gives us an opportunity of group participation, through individual contributions, to render melodic harmony of God’s greatness. Singing skills of altos, sopranos, tenors, and basses––enriched by the violins, piano, harp, organ and other musical instruments––create a human experience of joyfulness.

About Sherry Schumann
Sherry Schumann is a freelance author and photographer who serves as the prayer coordinator for
Christian Grandparenting Network, an organization committed to helping individuals and churches cultivate “intentionality” in inter-generational ministry by focusing on and strengthening the grandparent-grandchild relationship. She delights audiences with bits and pieces of her own redemption story as she delivers a powerful message about prayer.
Sherry and her husband of thirty-six years live in Moncks Corner and worship at St. Paul’s, Summerville. They treasure their three adult sons and their wives, plus four precious grandchildren, and they eagerly await the birth of their third granddaughter. Sherry’s novel,
The Christmas Bracelet, makes readers laugh and cry, sometimes simultaneously.

Dancing in the Rain:
The 10/40 Tribal Commission Prequel
by the Rev. Ryan T. Streett
|
|
After graduating college in 2009, my friend Chris and I spent several months in India on a vision trip, getting a feel for any ministry opportunities in that country where the fields may be “white for harvest” (John 4:35). We took along a backpack, two extra changes of clothes, and a couple of contact numbers for where we might start.
We began in the North of India and traveled by train all the way around the Eastern border to the southern tip of India in the state of Tamil Nadu. We taught English and Bible in a village with a small Christian school that had been set up by missionaries about a hundred years ago. Then we traveled back up North, right through the center of the country, and found our way to the big city of Hyderabad, where we met a contact who told us of a Hindu tribal group, the Banjara, that lived about four hours away back in the jungle. He owned a hostel and a little school in one of the villages where many orphans lived, and he said we were welcome to go and rent one of the rooms for as long as we liked, so we did.
After about a week of taking shifts where one person slept for a few hours while the other killed bugs in our room (there were so many bugs!) and trying to share the gospel with people who were not able to understand because of the language barrier, Chris and I felt it was time to leave. But we decided to give it just a little longer, and if the Lord didn’t open up a door for the gospel in the next couple of days,
then we would leave.

Prayers for Martha Vetter's Mission in Rwanda

Martha Vetter left for Rwanda on February 8, and she returns March 1. She asks you to pray that the Lord's Spirit will order her steps and guide her conversations with old friends, former students, and teachers, and as she teaches Bible lessons to various groups. Also, pray for the Spirit's wisdom as she makes decisions regarding Fraterine's medical and possible surgical treatment for his skin disorder, and as she interfaces with the legal system on behalf of one of her foster children.
