Join the Building and Grounds Committee
The SCM Board of Directors is looking for individuals with expertise in facilities management and/or operations to join our Building and Grounds Committee. This Committee meets on an as-needed basis to address significant campus repair, maintenance and operations issues as they arise. For example, if we experience problems with expensive HVAC equipment, we would like to have someone to consult regarding the need for repair or replacement of the equipment, vendor reputation and reasonableness of costs, among other matters.

We also are looking for individuals with expertise in building/facility security systems to assist in evaluating upgrades to our current system.

If you are interested in either or both of these opportunities to volunteer your time and expertise to the SCM community, or know of someone who may be, please contact Chris Jordan at  chris.gerard.jordan@gmail.com .
AC and HS to Host Climate Change Symposium on May 3
We invite you to save the date for a symposium on climate change,  From Knowing to Acting , presented by the Adolescent Community and High School students on Friday, May 3, 2019 on the SCM campus.

The mission of this symposium is to help create a sustainable future for Houston by educating our community about solutions to climate change and empowering one another to take action in our personal lives.

During the spring semester of the 2017-2018 school year, a select group of students from the AC and HS worked on and applied for a grant through the National Wildlife Federation. Over the summer the news reached us that the grant request was approved! This fall, the students and guides found out they were awarded $6,500 to be used towards the development of the symposium. Because of the generosity of the NWF, they will be able to bring their vision to life.

Every HS and AC student will be participating and conducting research on a topic of their choosing to be presented at the May 3rd symposium. These are Montessori students doing real work helping us all to see ways we can take action and be motivated to make a difference in the world.

PSO ACTIVITIES
Reminder: Help the PSO Plan for Next School Year
The St. Catherine’s Montessori Parent Service Organization (PSO) is already starting to plan for next school year! The PSO consists of committees dedicated to enhancing the experience of students, faculty, and parents at SCM. Each committee is led by one or two parent co-chairs.  New for next year , parents will have the opportunity to sign up as members of committees, which allows parents to be involved in committees of their interest at the level that best fits their own schedule.

Please join us next year by volunteering with one (or more) of the PSO committee using our SignUpGenius . Descriptions for each committee are found on the  SCM website .

For more information, please contact me at  pso@stcathmont.org
Thank you!

INSIDE and OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Singing Valentines
Yesterday, Ms. Maggie's Upper Elementary Classes participated in the annual Singing Valentines. Mr. Snow's class will deliver theirs tomorrow. Every year the UE students work hard to learn harmonies for classic songs of the season like "Lollipop," "Come Go With Me," "Earth Angel," and "Heaven".

Forms for Singing Valentines go home at the beginning of February. After which, the orders start pouring in for moms, dads, grandparents, special friends, Guides and staff. The 6th year students then call to make arrangements with the person ordering the secret singing treat. On the big day the students, dressed to impress, show up and surprise the lucky person with song. This year, they're even taking the show on the road (within 5 miles of school)!
UE Milk Going-Out
Two of Ms. Maggie's students visited a farm last week as a continuation of their Montessori Night research project on milk production.
HIGH SCHOOL CORNER
Welcome back to the High School Corner!

Our first stop during the Italian portion of our Greece and Italy trip was Florence, a city home to many masterful pieces of Renaissance art and architecture.
