This is our Annual Literacy Week which carries with it a number of fun events and prizes to promote literacy and reading for pleasure (please see below). I know our Knights will really enjoy this special week as we celebrate reading and literacy.

Just below we have repeated the information pertaining to this year's Parent Survey. The feedback from the survey is of tremendous help to our administration so if you have a student at LNMS, kindly take a few moments to complete the survey. Thank you.

Make it a great week!

With Knight Pride,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Parent Survey

Careful analysis of the survey results enriches understanding of areas of strength and effectiveness as well as those areas that possibly need improvement at LNMS. The survey findings will enable our school administration to measure parents' attitudes and help target improvement strategies focused on student achievement. Please invest a few minutes to take the survey below. Thank you!

Media Minutes
By Sharon Powers, Media Specialist

As Celebrate Literacy Week runs this week, I want to take a few minutes of your time to direct you to great parent resources which highlight reading and literacy.

Middle school tends to be a time when independent, self-selected reading drops off sharply. Students are more concerned with the social aspect of school and their lives in general. Reading for pleasure takes a backseat to hanging out with friends, playing Fortnite, and social media. It is important as parents that we continue to push and expect our students to read.  The power of 20 minutes of reading at home each night is HUGE! The Florida Department of Education website has some wonderful resources for parents. Check it out!

SSYRA Book Review: Eureka Key by Sarah Thompson
(Review provided by Goodreads.com)

When middle school puzzle master Sam and history wiz Martina win a contest for a summer trip across the US, they discover they've been drafted into something vastly more extraordinary. Joining another kid on the trip, Theo, a descendant of George Washington himself, they must follow clues to find seven keys left behind by the Founding Fathers. Together the keys unlock Benjamin Franklin's greatest invention - a secret weapon intended to defend the country. Each key is hidden in a unique location around the U.S., protected with puzzles, riddles, and traps. This has kept the weapon safe . . . until now! Gideon Arnold, a dangerous descendant of the infamous Benedict Arnold, is on the chase.

In competition with Arnold and his thugs to reach the artifacts first, Sam, Martina, Theo, and readers must use their wits to solve ingenious puzzles, escape death-by-booby-trap, and, by the end of the series, save our nation by uncovering many of its greatest secrets.

I read this last week and loved it! This first novel in a series is action packed and filled with excitement, thrills, and chills. A lot of historical information regarding our founding fathers is weaved into this page turner. Fans of the movie "National Treasure" will love this!

"Stellar Recognition" for These Knights . . .
Ms. Powers and Mr. Vega

Last Thursday our Teacher of the Year and our Support person of the Year were honored at the OCPS Stellar Awards annual event. We are so proud of Ms. Powers (media specialist) and Mr. Vega (technology support representative) for always showing us what it truly is to be a Stellar KNIGHT.

Congratulations again!!!

Knight Athletics
Both basketball teams open their seasons with victories over Innovation Middle.

Lake Nona basketball is off to a great start! Both teams set the tone for their seasons last Wednesday evening as they defeated Innovation Middle School on their home court. Huge thanks to all of the teachers and fans that came out to support us at our first game. It means a great deal to our student-athletes.

The first home game of the season will be Wednesday, January 30th against Hunter's Creek Middle School. Our girls' team looks to get redemption as this was their only loss of the regular season last year. The boys' game starts at 5pm and the girls play immediately after.

Let's pack the Kingdom for our Knights!
