Dreamer Scholars Volunteer with Elders

Fifth graders in the"I Have A Dream" program at Columbine Elementary recently started volunteering at Frasier Meadows, helping senior citizens with fun group activities, like drum circle and card games. The Dreamer Scholars also help residents return to their rooms after the activities.

"I Have A Dream" program services include more than just academic support . We help kids learn about the impact of service to their community. We want them to know they can make a difference in their world.

Dreamer Scholars say the experience has been wonderful. Selena says, "Volunteering is amazing. The people are funny and nice. They tell us cool stories about the past." Ashley says, "I felt nervous at first but then I got used to it. It's good that we go there to care for them...so seniors don't get lonely."

Connect with a Dreamer Scholar yourself-- become a volunteer mentor !

About the "I Have A Dream" Foundation of Boulder County
Since 1990, the award-winning "I Have A Dream" Foundation of Boulder County has assisted 1,000 children from low-income areas in achieving their education and career goals by providing long-term personal and academic support, tutoring, mentoring and four-year tuition-assistance scholarships to each graduating student. The organization sponsors entire groups of students from elementary schools or from low-income housing sites and works with these children and their families from elementary school through high school graduation and then "to and through" college. Currently, there are 10 active "I Have A Dream" classes in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley School Districts. The "I Have A Dream" Foundation of Boulder County has doubled expected graduation rates for its graduating classes of students and has awarded over $2 million in scholarships. The program follows the national model established in New York in 1981 by founder Eugene Lang.
