Living with a sick parent is never easy, and taking care of their home after they've passed away can be equally difficult. For Jennifer Adams, a resident at Jenkins School Apartments, selling her mother's home was something she knew she had to do. "I couldn't take care of that house anymore, so my family and I decided to sell it. I knew that meant I needed to find somewhere else to live. I'm a teacher and I've lived here my whole life, so I didn't want to move far away."

On a teacher's salary, Jennifer began her hunt to find an affordable apartment. She had heard that the old elementary school - where she attended first grade - was renovated into a senior housing community and she thought she'd start there. "It wasn't far from my mother's house. I was put on the waiting list and I moved in after an apartment became available. It was the best decision I ever made."
Jennifer explained that she loves living at Jenkins School Apartments, mainly because she feels safe. "One time, after a long day at work, I came home with an arm full of groceries, left my keys in the door, and didn't realize it until the next morning. Anywhere else that could've been bad, but I never once questioned my safety." Jennifer also noted that it was nice to find an affordable place to call home, where her neighbors are all friendly, and where her cat is also welcome. "He was my mother's cat and he loves living here, too. He really likes to lay in the window."
Misty Collins, Property Manager at Jenkins School Apartments, explained that Jennifer is a wonderful resident with a big heart and a passion for her community. "She's so caring, positive, and always offers a kind word. She works long, tiring days as a teacher and never complains." Jennifer is an Instructional Assistant and is assigned to a special needs student in the first grade at her school, but also helps out with other children when she's needed. "It's so rewarding to see my students conquer the little things that we all take for granted. Remembering to hang their coat or washing their hands well - it's the little things that make me so proud!"
We're honored to shine the spotlight on someone who clearly makes an impact on their community. Thank you, Jennifer, for letting us share your story!
